My Niacin experience...

Oh well guys, it didn't turn out so good for me. Today ended my third week and the darn itchys are not getting any better. Talked to the dr. and she told me to lay off for a few days, and if the itchys go, then I am not going to beable to tolerate it. She told me to get a good B-C complex vitamin, which I use to take before anyway, and also told me to try the green tea. Oh well, leave it to me to have a stupid body that refuses to tolerate much..

Going shopping tomorrow for the B-C vitamins, and will try the tea tonight, if it works fine, if not....I QUIT!!! Any good recommendations for a good B-C complex? I forgot exactly what I took before, think it was by Nature Springs, but not totally sure. I do take a C vitamin now, 500 with Rose Hips, but that is just an extra I have always taken with my multi.

Have a good one....

Re: My Niacin experience...

JJ,

Have you had any luck with the Niacin since your last post?

I've been using Inositol Hexanicotinate - a slow-release version - and I no longer even feel anything when I take it. I'm at 500mg/day right now. When I started 2 1/2 weeks ago, just 250mg gave me a flush and tingling sensation in my lips, and even a slight throat constriction the first dose.

Since then I seem to have become used to it.

I'm going to up my dose to 750mg/day this weekend and keep it there until I go to the doctor on the 24th.

I hope to have higher HDL and lower triglycerides on my next test.

Keep your chin up!

Re: My Niacin experience...

Have either of you tried dissolving 2000mg vitamin C in a glass of water, and then take the niacin? It seems to minimize any flushing effect. At least, I've found it to be true. Maybe it's just me, or a coincidence. I don't know. But I wish you would try it and let me know how it works for you. I usually use the powdered ascorbic acid (Vitamin Shoppe Brand) when I take my last dose of niacin in the evening.

Re: My Niacin experience...

Hi Hubble.....I talked with the dr. as I needed to call her for a refill thing. She told me to lay off it for a few days and see if the itchys went away, which they did....

I certainly didn't think a lousy dose of 100 mgs. would bother me, so I have just been staying off it to see if it was the Niacin or something else. So far the itchys are gone, so I am leary of trying to go back on it again, but would like to give it another shot.

Glad to hear U are upping your dose and not getting any problems, that is good news. Hopefully it will do the job and U will get the results U want. I really wish U all the luck in the world, and if things don't go right, definitely time for the Beach Bum life......

**************************************** *******
Arizona, at first I was taking the Niacin after lunch, but I will admit, I am a very lite eater, so tried it after supper. That is also when I take my garlic and calcium, as I take my multi and C in the a.m. I asked the dr. if taking it with the garlic and calcium was wrong, but she said it should make no difference. Maybe I should switch things around, and try taking the C after supper and see if that helps??? What the heck, it can't hurt. Thanx for the tip, and I will let ya know if it works, as like I said, I would like to give it another shot, but if it still doesn't work, right in the ole pail with it.

Hope U are staying cool, can't believe we were in sweats last week, and need AC the last couple of days. Man, has this been a wacky weather pattern or what? Seems we get no spring or fall, right from winter to summer.

Take care, and TTYL....

Arizona,

I've been taking my 500mg IH with 1000mg vitamin-c. I usually also take it with a large glass of water with a little OJuice mixed in for flavor. Like I said, I seem to have become used to the niacin, and don't experience any side effects now. Hopefully it will still work to increase my HDL.

I've never had luck boosting my HDL - not even with lots of exercise.

Speaking of which, I'm able to jog for 1/2 hour straight - something I couldn't come close to a year ago. Lipitor really did a number on my muscles back then. The pain was relentless, and I was so weak... I could barely jog 10 minutes - and I had to really push to do just that. My goal is to run 5 miles in 45 minutes by the end of the summer - and do that 3-4 times/week. Even if it doesn't boost my HDL much, exercise is still one of the best things to maintain a healthy body.

I've dropped another 2 pounds. Still have 15-20 to go - but I'm determined to get down to my weight from when I was around 25.
