Has anyone tried herbs/whole foods to lower their cholesterol?

As posted in a previous thread, I was on Vytorin, but was taken off of it in less than a week. I asked the doctor if I could try herbs, and he said yes. SO...now I am going to try to do research and try that.

I did get a copy of my results from the doctor and here are the results:

Cholesterol 279
Triglyceride 246
HDL 53
Total Chol/HDL Ratio 5.3
VLDL Cholesterol 49
LDL Cholesterol 177

Ok, I know that these are all high. Considering the family history, mine are good compared to theirs, BUT....I want to work on getting these down.

Has anyone had any success with herbs (as well as dietary changes)? If so, can you tell me what herbs/whole foods you took and what dosage? I haven't done research yet, but I have heard that Garlic helps, and several other. I just thought I'd post here before searching.

I took, for 3 months, 3 garlic pills daily and it had no effect on my cholesterol levels.

Try avoiding high-carb foods to lower your triglycerides - it's worked for me: potatoes, white rice, bread and pasta, sugar, etc.

Hi, Jennifer!!

I did lower my cholesterol significantly once, the natural way, but when I stopped, my cholesterol soared, according to my last test. Here were my initial numbers, then my results 3 months later from taking herbal supplements (Red Yeast Rice, Policosinal, Cholest-Off, etc.):


TC: 269
LDL: 191
HDL: 58
Trigs: 100

After using herbs:

TC: 204
LDL: 104
HDL: 77
Trigs: 113

My total cholesterol was recently 339, however, so I am back on the herbs... Shame on me for getting lazy and stopping them in the first place!

Your numbers are a lil high but I think U might beable to get them down with diet and exercise. Like MG said, go VERY lite on starchy things or sugar for the Trigs. Also try a 1/4 to 1/2 Tsp. of regular store bought cinnamon each day, oatmeal, and some extra vitamin C. I take a multi and 500 C in the a.m., have oatmeal each morning with my cinnamon, and after dinner take a garlic, calcium and another 500 C. Also been drinking alot of Bigelow green tea the last few months. I took my TC from 232 to 198 and my LDL from 161 to 126 afterr I started the cinnamon and green tea. Don't know if it will stay like that, as I never had numbers that low, but hey, at least I can say I saw it once........

Read some of the posts here, many folks have some good info. and have also brought their numbers down. Of course like anything, we all have to try something else if things don't work, but keep at it, and something will work sooner or later, hopefully sooner.

Hi Jennifer,! My mom dropped her cholesterol also, the same as MG & JJ. She used green tea (2x daily), ponegrante juice, cinnamon, and garlic. She is waiting for the result from 2 days ago. She is now down to 203 and was 266.

She also tried take control spread, minute maid heartwise o.j. and plenty of veggies. She practices a high fiber -- low fat diet. Good luck!

Those butters and OJ drinks etc all have the same stuff added which is just plant sterols, I do drink a lot of that Minute Maid OJ and it seems to have helped, I wrote another thread about the foods I ate to cut down on my genetic cholesterol in another thread if that helps.
