I have in my hands right now the Cleveland Plain Dealer at which the Crestor story is on the front page.
The study involved 349 patients over a two year period who took the maximum dose of Crestor.
The participants average LDL dropped from 130.4 to an unprecedented 60.8 Their HDL jumped from an average 43.1 to 49. Lenin, you and I are right about there !
They used Intravascular ultrasound imaging and Nissen and his colleagues could actually SEE less plaque buildup !
The results surprized Nissen...
"I'm going to eat a little humble pie on this, because I had basically said publicly that I didn't think any degree of lowering of LDL cholesterol would regress disease, "Nissen said.
"The hypothesis was that if you got cholesterol levels down really low, you could keep new disease from forming but that you couldn't reverse what was already there."
A previous Clinic-led study announced in 2003 showed just that: High doses of the Statin Lipitor brought average LDL to a low of 79 and prevented plaque buildup from getting any worse. But the regimen did not scrub away existing plaque, as Crestor did.
The Crestor study included ONLY patients who ALEADY had coronary blockages !
Nissen also said that NONE of the patients in his trial suffered muscle damage, and that, overall, the drug appeared well tolerated.
