Re: What is the significance of VLDL?

VLDL (Very Low Density Lipoprotein) this lipoproteinís function is to transport Triglycerides in the blood stream and is associated with an increased risk of heart disease. (< 40 is desirable, > 40 increases CAD risk)

This is what I found. It looks like you are in good shape. I am planning to ask my husband's doctor for this test next time he has his cholesterol checked because I read somewhere it is a better indicator of heart disease than the LDL number. It is not included in our standard cholesterol test.

Re: What is the significance of VLDL?

As a side note, the VLDL can be calculated in a couple of ways. One method is to divide the triglycerides by 5, and another is by subtracting LDL and HDL cholesterol from total cholesterol The 2nd calculation may not be entirely accurate if there are other cholesterol-containing lipoprotiens present. It will however give you a rough idea of what yours is. Dividing the triglycerides by 5 only works if the triglycerides are 400 or less.
