Is anyone on Ezetimibe/Zetia - High Cholesterol Message Board

Hi

Its now been decided that i cant tolerate statins so this drug has been mentioned. It is not a statin and it takes a while for benefits to show. I wonder if anyone has heard of it?

It's a commonlly prescribed drug that acts in the intestines to prevent the body from absorbing cholesterol. This deprives the liver of cholesterol with the result that the liver pulls some from the bloodstream thus lowering LDL about 18% (in 3 studies) without having an effect on the HDL cholesterol.

Watch out for joint pain (call your doctor) and there can be a problem with diarrhea. Monitor your liver function with a blood test in a month or two. It shouldn't be too hard to take.

My husband couldn't take statins due to severe joint pain. The doctor put him on Zetia and he can't that that either. He was sick to his stomach all the time. He just can't take these drugs to lower chlorestrol.

If you cannot tolerate a statin..it is highly unlikely that you will be able to tolerate zetia. While Zetia is "supposed" to work in the intestine and remove cholesterol, that is not all it does. It also does not allow you to absorb Coq10 and other essential vitamins. WHile they have been truthful in saying it does not effect the production of COq10...they did not go far enough in their tests to find it stops the absorption of Coq10. The trials on Zetia were only for 12 weeks....hardly long enough to find any problems. ALso Health Canada has issued warnings of similiar problems to those of statins. A liver test is important..however it has been found that not all muscle related problems show up on liver tests. A muscle biopsy was in order...and that also can be flawed if the part of the muscle that is damaged is not taken as a sample.

I was on Statins (Atorvastatin, Simvastatin and Pravastatin) but after muscle weakness, abdominal pains and memory loss on all the statins I was put on it has been decided that statins and me don't mix

I was then put on Ezetimibe in January this year but I think they may have now started to display side affects. Namely minor stomach pain on awakening, dry skin on my face, ears and scalp as well as red patches around my nose and eyes and also hive like welts in the corner of one eye...

I take the drug last thing at night and awake with the problems. The stomach pain goes away soon after getting up but my skin problems are always worse first thing in the morning but do get a little better during the day only to reappear the next morning. Coincidence?

Anyway I stopped using Ezetimibe yesterday to see if I can wake up without stomach pains and no skin problems and this morning no stomach pains and my skin has gotten better not worse........
