Checkup = High Cholesterol

Just looking for some basic advice. I went it to the first checkup I've had in awhile and had some bloodwork done.

The came pretty bad.

Bad CH was 150

Good CH was 44

Tri's were 444

Total Cholesterol was 228

I'll be the first to say I've not been doing a very good job on eating/exercise. I'm scheduled to go in and talk with him about this in a few days.

I would eat Frozen Custard quite a bit as well as many sweets. Drank lots of soda. At least 2-3 cans per day.

We ate out quite a bit with big dinners etc.

I didn't work out at all. My daily job is sitting at a desk all day.

I'm going to try and avoid medication if I can.

I've officially started my own remedies.

Cut out all sweets. I still eat out quite a bit and will probably continue to do so. But during the work week for lunch I've changed from eating large amount to smaller portions and taking off things like cheese etc.

For instance I loved Subway and would eat there everyday but my sub would be a footlong melt with cheese,bacon,vineagar,oil,salt, etc. Well you see how I've managed to make a healthy place unhealthy.

I've switched to getting a 6 inch meat only with just veggies, no cheese and only vineagar.

Another example our usual steak house stop rather than the big steak I got a salmon with steamed veggies. Of course someone informed me I needed to ask for little or no butter. I wondered why it still tasted pretty good

I've changed all drinking to water and about 2 propels per day. Which is gatorades flavored fitness water.

I'm getting ready to join a gym and try to work out 30-60 minutes about 3 times per week.

Basically am I heading the right direction?

I'm only 26 and a bit overweight and with my first kid on the way I want to live a very long life if possible.

Re: Checkup = High Cholesterol

The only really bad thing I see is your Trigs at 444. I think if you knocked off the soda, sweets and lower your bread intake, U could get those Trigs. down.

Definitely exercising will help as well. trigs are usually fairly easy to bring down by limiting your carb intake as well as sweets. Stay away from processed foods, the things U buy in stores as pre packaged, God only knows what is in it to keep such a long shelf life. Try eating oatmeal, and also take a 1/2 tsp. of cinnamon each day. Cinnamon is good for LDL as well as keeping your glucose levels lower, and that will also help your Trigs. Some folks use the capsules, but I use the reg. ground stuff U buy in a store, as U can usually get a cheap jar for about 1.29. Many folks here use fish oil capsules as well. Take some time and read some of the posts here, U will find many different things folks have done to avoid meds. if at all possible.

Subway sandwiches are good, but that is also alot of bread, so go easy on that and maybe switch to a nice salad for lunch, just stay away from spinach right now........ Your young, so change your eating habits and I think U just may get those numbers down.

Best of wishes.......

Re: Checkup = High Cholesterol

Just cut back on the carbs, and all that sugar, and I think your triglycerides will come down.

Re: Checkup = High Cholesterol

Hello! I just wanted to comment as well about cutting back on your sodas and even your Propel. Be sure to double check and see just how much sugar is in the Propel. I think Gatorade came out with a flavored water that only has 2g of sugar - you might want to look for that. You are on the right track with cutting back on cheese and pretty much all the good stuff - LOL! I am 27 and my tri's were in the 900's - I brought them down to 450 in 6 weeks by watching what I ate and also taking Omega 3... I so suggest you try the Fish Oil. Lots of luck to you!

rlu,

There's a basic inconsistency in these numbers: usually the LDL is calculated backwards from the formula:
TC = LDL + HDL + TG/5

Putting the numbers into the right had side give a total cholesterol of 283, far worse than the 228. Usually when tiglycerides are that high one is usually told "cannot calculate LDL with triglycerides over 400." One CAN measure LDL directly but it;s not common and the results usually agree with the formula better.

Can you recheck those results? Does it say anything like "LDL (calculated)?"
