New test numbers - High Cholesterol Message Board

Just got my test results back yesterday. First I want to say what I am doing...I do not take a statin...I have been taking Inositol Hexanicotinate which is a form of niacin which has no flush, I am on a dose of 1500 mg's taken with the evening meal. I take 3 fish oil pills a total of 3600 mg.
My original total cholesterol was 269, Triglycerides were 218, Hdl bounced from 50 t0 60's , Ldl was 162
ON 1000 mg of Niacin my total dropped to 229, Triglycerides were 149 and Ldl was 139.

My new numbers while on 1500 mg of niacin and fish oil are:

Total cholesterol 212, Triglycerides are 114, Hdl 50, Ldl 139 my test said my ratio is Normal

I am going to add L-Carnitene 500mg because the cardiologist's are saying that it will lower cholesterol, triglycerides and raise HDL. My Ldl is 9 points from the normal range and so I am going to concentrate on it also, but the higher HDL will take care of that also.
All in all I am happy because the Liver test is perfect and my doctor said that is the only concern with Niacin and does not know of any bad side effects and I have to agree because I have never had any.

Wow, awesome results! I too have high tri's at 218 the last check in Sept. I have been taking 3600mgs fish oils along with garlic(1200mg), vit E(460mg), Vit C(2000mg), B complex and my multi - oh and gingko for circulation. I have read so much good stuff about niacin but have been shy about taking so much and that other stuff, the L-Carnitene I've also researched is excellent for lowering tri's, LDL and raising HDL. My HDL was low at 32(should be 50 or better) but my LDL was good at 92 and overall cholesterol is 168. My ratio is out of whack! I may give that niacin a try and the L-Carnitene as well. Should I ask my doc first you think?

. I may pick up a bottle of the Inositol tomorrow at the health food store. I've used the Slo-Niacin with my Vytorin 10/20 and finally got my HDL above 40 (but with just 500 mg). I would like to get my HDL up for the new year

Tori, Thanks, I am pleased with most of my report but like you I want my HDL as high as I can get it. I'm told exercise will raise it. My Tri's have been on the higher side and I am happy to see them coming down. My doctor knows that I am adding the L-Carnitine and said it was okay to try it. I am starting at 500mg and will check to see if anything good comes of it and I will post my results. My doctor was the one to suggest the Inositol Hexanicotinate, a true no flush niacin, and he told me that routine checks on the liver was all that was needed because there are no other known bad side effects and it is rare that the liver is affected at the doses I take which is 1500mg. To answer your question, yes I would ask my doctor first, and I hope you have a doctor that is willing to work with you like mine is.
