Anyone have side effects while on Zocor that weren't listed? Thanks.

Re: Zocor side effects

I m a 34yr old male, pretty healthy but I am or was taking zocor for 1 yr until last week.... Last week I woke up with a horrible charlie horse in my calf, which I was finally able to get rid of by walking on it, while I was walking on it I became extremely dizzy and fainted and smashed my head on the side of a table (many stitches req). The next day I notice my urine was extremely foamy (bubbley) and my back started to hurt and then my sides and then my stomach...... So anyway I go to the ER and get blood work done and my Protien levels were raised slightly, but more importantly my creatine levels were sky high. I had blood work done the night of the fall and they were fine, but this blood test the next day showed my creatine levels were 2.8 up from the normal 1.1 the night of the fall. I was admitted into the hospital so they could keep an eye on my kidney functions and my creatine levels continued to rise all the way to 3.4, but the ironic thing is that every single test and picture they took came back normal, so the doctors were very confused on what was happening. Finally a kidney specialist was called in and he concluded that everthing from the charlie horse to fainting to the pain and the foamy urine all was related and direct cause of the Zocor. The kidney specialist called this Rhabdomyolysis. If you start to feel weak when you do daily things like brush your hair or just moving your arms or legs in general this could be the beginning of the zocors negative effects, if you notice your urine being very foamy or bubblely this is a def. sign that something is not right. Keep a close eye on it.

Re: Zocor side effects

Wow, John73. My side effect was nothing like that, so I feel very fortunate. I had been on Lipitor but due to insurance not paying for it anymore I got switched to Zocor. I was on it maybe 3 months. I experienced forgetfulness. I would be speaking to friends and I would forget in mid-sentence what I was talking about and at times I felt like I was in a fog. It got to the point that my friends asked me if I was ok. Finally I went to the dr. to get something else. I was put on Zetia which I've been on for over a year and everything is ok. One final note: an insurance company doctor sent me basically a form letter suggesting that I try Crestor or Vytorin. I don't know anything about Crestor but Vytorin contains Zocor and Zetia. Why would I want to try anything with Zocor in it?? after what I experienced.

Re: Zocor side effects

Hubby takes Zocor, he has right shoulder pain that we attribute to the Zocor, even though the Dr. does not believe it from the Zocor. Muscle pains and weakness from statins are more common that these doctors let on.

Re: Zocor side effects

I've tried 3 different statins for about two years each... Pravachol, Lipitor, and Baychol. I stopped each of them due to pain and other side effects... I stopped Baychol, because of the extreme muscle cramping, two weeks before they pulled it off the market. They pulled it off the market because it was killing people... disintegrating the heart muscle, if I remember correctly. My opinion is that anyone willing to take a statin is nuts. It's just a matter of time before you get screwed by them.

I decided to take my chances of high cholester rather than go on statins again... and made that very clear to my Doctor. This is when he asked me if I would try niacin. I agreed, and have done well with it.

I get a feeling that 20 or 30 years from now we will see a lot of muscle damage, nerve damage, of memory loss due to statins.

Re: Zocor side effects

I have taken Lipitor (ao ro 20 mg.) daily for 9 years, my partner has taken Zocor (20 mg. simvastatin) for 6 years...both rather low doses.

Neither of us has had anything we could call a side-efffect other than my having a slight ache in my thighs the first week that has never recurred.

Of course, at the first sign of dark urine, any statin should IMMEDIATELY be discontinued and the kidneys evaluated until rhabdomyolysis can be competely discounted. One's serum Creatine Phosphokinase (CPK aka CK) SOARS when muscle damage occurs, so an immediate blood test can detect it. Anyone WITH rhado MUST be under the care of an expert nephrologist to get the wastes from dead muscle tissue out through the kidneys without destroying them in the process.

Since statiins are taken for a long time the onset of rhabdo might be very slow so adequate watchfulness is important.
All that said, rhabdomyolyisis remains a rare condition.

I recommend a CPK with every routine blood test for statin users.

If you had problems with Zocor, I wouldn't try Crestor....it is a stronger statin than Zocor, and therefore has a higher rate of side effects.

Zocor seemed to cause me to be constipated; seems less of a problem now that I'm on Lipitor. I've been on relatively high doses of Zocor (and subsequently Lipitor) for almost 3 years, with no problems yet. I've always taken it with CoQ10; I don't know if that actually makes a difference, but since it seems to be harmless (except on my wallet) I keep taking it just in case it does help.

I've seen data to show that the rate of muscle pain with statins is about the same as the rate of muscle pain with placebo (5% if I'm remembering correctly). Virtually everyone experiences periodic aches and pains as we age. So in the absence of SEVERE weakness and pain, and clinical evidence of rhabdomyolosis (which is why we need to have blood tests done regularly if we're on statins), I'm not too worried about side effects.

Re: Zocor side effects

I started on Mevacor back in March; 3 wks. into it, my feet and legs hurt so bad I could hardly walk. Switched to Lopid; same thing 2 wks. later. Then came Zetia, with no reprieve. Finally, Zocor, and I had such bad cramps in my calves that I finally said enough. I'm trying the RYR and so far no ill effects...we'll see how it goes. (Interesting note...the day after I stopped the Zocor, my ankles stopped swelling, and I got rid of alot of fluid. Anyone else had this happen?)

I took Zocor,20mg, for about 6 months, during that time I had muscle spasms
in my right calf, lower back, also the muscle that goes from the knee down to
the foot, under my foot, and a strange buzzing sensation in my left thigh
muscle. I even noticed that my left eyelid was twitching slightly.
There were also instances of severe cramping in my right calf muscle, and
a strange cramping in one of my toes on my right foot.

(At the time of a routine visit to the doctor about 3 months into the Zocor,
I was getting the calf cramps and spasms, as well as the foot cramps,-
And I did mention these issues to him in reference to the Zocor,
The doctor shrugged it off and said that it wasn't from the Zocor. I reluctantly continued taking the Zocor for another 3 months, and it was in
that time period that the other symptoms kicked in. I was wondering if it
was caused from working long hours, not enough sleep, not eating right,
not taking vitamins / potassium deficiency?)

I never had all these spasms or 'charlie-horse' cramps before I started taking
the Zocor, -- so on my own, I stopped taking the Zocor to see if it would make a difference. Sure enough, after about a week, I noticed a decrease
in the number of calf and back spasms. It took about a total of 3-4 weeks
before I noticed that all of the symptoms had vanished.

Needless to say, I was relieved, and I am lucky that the spasms/cramps did
not continue. From what I have been reading online, there are many people
who have continued muscle pain even after stopping the use of their
statin drug.

I do realize that everyone reacts differently to these statin drugs,
but are some people feeling a false sense of security if they don't
experience "noticeable" muscle spasms within the first 6 months? Or first year? By the time some people get symptoms, it may be too late to reverse
the muscle damage.

As for me, I'm going to try my best to control my cholesterol
by eating a stricter, healthier diet, with supplements. This is easier said
than done, but I don't want to take any statin drugs that pose a risk for potential muscle damage. My next blood test will show my progress.

In the past, my cholesterol w/o Zocor was 240 to 260,
w/Zocor was 178. I'm hoping now to get it around 200 w/o Zocor.

Re: Zocor side effects

I have had three different doctors that wanted to put me on statins. Two of them, when I asked about side effects, said that they I had nothing to worry about but I still refused. They last doctor made me go in for a heart scan and a carotid ultrasound and they both show zero plaque with blood pressure below 120/70. And this after 25 years of a cholesterol of 270-300. I have been taking vitamins the whole time and I think that has everything to do with me having zero plaque. I guess the doctors must know that if your cholesterol is high then it sticks to your arteries whereas if it is low it doesn't. And there must be many studies that prove just that, right? And these studies must be so detailed and unequivocal that they can now say that if you had a heart attack your cholesterol should be knocked down below 100 and if you have no heart disease then it should be below 200 even though most people have a cholesterol above that. At $100-150 a month for a statin, the drug companies don't really make any money on statins, they sell them because they really care about us. The side effects are nothing to worry about, they say. Maybe they are working on drugs to counteract the side effects of statins right now. We can suppose that the drug companies know more than your own body what your cholesterol level in your blood should be even though the body uses cholesterol to do some very necessary work. You still have to wonder if statins weren't so profitable if they would be advertising them and trying to sell them like they do now. Again, where are the studies that show that high cholesterol sticks to your arteries and low cholesterol doesn't and at what levels?

I'm having the exact same side effects. My memory is getting bad. I can be sitting at my desk and think of something I need to do and turn to my computer and not remember what I was going to do. Like you I feel like I'm in a fog all the time. I'm 51 so it's too early for Alzheimer's (I think)! I also switched from Lipitor to Zocor due to insurance. I'm curious if you have found a solution yet to your problem?
