Okay, guys, this is just for us women, of course (I hope, anyway!).
For you ladies taking niacin or Niaspan and have flushing, and you're old enough to be in peri-menopause or beyond---Is the niacin flush anything like hot flashes/flushes you get in that wonderful phase of our lives? Sometimes when I get those, they last for hours and I feel hot all over, not just my face.

Some lady friends that I know who have/are experiencing menopause and have taken niacin say they are not alike at all... that they would take the niacin flushing over the hot flashes anytime.
The laugh when I say niacin gives me a hot flash... that is, they laugh at me.

If I ended up taking the Niaspan, hopefully I won't find out! I've out hyperthyroid where I'm burning up all over, menopausal hot "flashes" that lasted for hours, and now possibly niacin flush?!?! OH, well. Could be worse!

They really are nothing alike, but i guess if I had the choice it would be a Niacin flush...at least I have a chance to control it with a baby aspirin, which does not always work.
No control over a peri-menopausal hot flash
My husband at his wise old age 0f 56 finally said to me (as I was having a very bad night for sleep) that it really must suck to be a woman in meno.!!

I take Advicor which contains niacin, at times I have had a mild flush which isn't bad, but a couple times the flushing was horrible and afterward came extreme itching, I don't think this is normal, tomorrow I have an appt. with the Dr. to dicuss this. To me hot flashes from menopause is more like a warming feeling, the niacin is like a burning feeling under the skin. I'd take the hot flashes over the niacin flush myself.

I also take Advicor and it is completely normal to have extreme flushing, it is annoying and can be frightening for some at first.
Try a 81mg baby aspirin about 20 minutes before it and it should help, not always but I have had pretty good luck!
I think it is worth staying on, it has helped my numbers considerably, try to think of the flushing as a good detoxifying of your blood, it helped me to think of it that way.
