Can someone tell me why my doctor wouldn't prescribe Niacin with these numbers. Thanks
TC- 173
HDL- 34
Triglycerides- 571

First. Can you tell me how your doctor tested your cholesterol? The reason I ask is that unless you where tested using a direct LDL measurement then the results are next to worthless with the Triglycerides being 571. Most test use a caculated method to obtain a LDL value and the results are very inaccurate when the TGs are above 400. I would be sure you had an accurate test before I got worried about the LDL. Now your TGs definately need some work. Think low carb and fishoil for starters.

Knucklehead comes to mind...

I suppose because your TC numbers are in the normal range... he has looked past your extremely low HDL and extremely high TG's.

Niacin is the only proven medication that can significantly raise HDL and lower TG's...

My guess is that your Doctor is unaware of the benifits of niacin.

Tell him to review Niapsan... maybe he will believe in an FDA approved therapy. I've been taking 3000 mg for over a year now... and highly recommend folks trying this.

Ditto what has already been said. If those HDL and triglyceride numbers are anywhere near accurate, it is a heart attack waiting to happen. Gotta get them under control ASAP, with diet and exercise changes being essential, and niacin being advisable soon thereafter especially if you are in your 40s or older and have other risk factors.
