Linus Pauling cholesterol treatment

Linus Pauling's research suggests that high dosages of vitamin C, and Lysine can lower the risk of plaque formation. The theory is that Vitamin C, and Lysine binds up the LP(a) and make it less likely to stick to your arteries. So my question is has anyone tried this and if so what were the results? My Dr. typically doesn't test for LP(a) but the one time he did, it was 42!

I started taking 6g of C, and 3g of Lysine, but now I need to figure out how to monitor the results. I get blood work done on the 22nd of January and I'm going to ask my Dr. to do LP(a) again, but it might be too soon since I just started taking the C.

Besides Pauling's research to my best understanding Niacin will work very well and is a very effective treatment for lowering LP(a). In order for it to be effective Niacin must be taken in the 1,000mg-3,000mg amount. I currently take 2,000mg of immediate release Niacin and am going to have my lipid panel in two weeks.

I personally take 2,000mg Vitamin C daily but would not take more. 6 grams is very high and it will be interesting to see how things turn out. The only thing you may need to keep in mind that taking such a high dosage of Vitamin C can significantly increase your risk in developing kidney stones. The upper limit of Vitamin C is set at 2,000mg daily.

If this is what happens, it would reduce the buildup of plaque. But it wouldn't affect serum cholesterol levels.

love2fishfork;
When you get your bloodwork done next week be sure to ask your doctor ahead of time, (like today) for the VAP bloodwork test. It is a bit more expensive than the standard cholesterol screening and many doctor's would be surprised if you ask for it but it is well worth it.
It not only gives you the normal breakdowns (i.e. Triglycerides,HDL, LDL) but it also give you the LDL pattern density which is invaluable information.
The LPa is also included on this extensive test. Mine was recently found to be 11 which was slightly over the range of anything <10.

I was able to get my Dr. to order a VAP, but they warned me that my insurance might not cover it! I wouldn't mind paying out of pocket assuming it's not a huge amount! Anyone know what the test costs?
