Post How much niacin should I take?

Well I finally got brave and started to take the non flush niacin. I started slow and now I am up to 1000 mgs a day. So far I have not felt any side affects. Does that mean that it is not working? ANyway, how much are we suppose to take to be effective? Do we have to go up to 3000 mgs? I really would hate to do this due to possible liver damage, I also take 2000 mgs of fish oil and 3000 mgs of standardized guggl lipid. It seems that my whole life revolves around taking pills. It was much easier taking one zocor at night!! Anyway, please, could you advise me as to how much you are taking of the niacin? thanks

Mandie, have you seen my post under "alfalfa for cholesterol lowering"?

No I have not- but it is just driving me crazy with all of the so called "cholesterol" lowering remedies out there. How does one know the right one to take. We can't take our blood all the time to know. Right now , I wish that I could go back on the zocor. I am really tempted to do so because of all the pills tht I take to substitute for it. Do you know how much niacin I should take? No one else answered this-

At this time, we are taking 500 mg. in the AM and
500 mg. in the PM. Don't think we care to go to the
3000mg. Although the non flush niacin is not
supposed to be as hard on the liver as the reg.
niacin. We, also, are taking the policosanol. Do
not have any desire to go back to statins or the
non statins. As with other medications, just
because something may be good for you doesn't mean
a whole lot more, will do that much more good.

I tried taking the non-flush 1000mg and both times I was sick all day! I took it with meals. Just made me queasy off and on all day...I guess I can't take them.

I will check out the alfalfa... I have to get tested again this month for him to determine if I need to go on statins and I do NOT want to! My numbers are total 261 LDL 153 HDL 84 Ration 1.82 Trigs 122 People have tod me not to worry - but my dad had a triple bypass and high cholesterol must run in the family. I want to do Atkins, but I don't need to lose weight. I think eating all that fatty stuff will make me gain!

Have a blessed day!!!

Your numbers and ratios are excellent, especially the important ones, HDL and Trigs. Forget about any supplements except for Omega 3's, which everyone should take.
