My numbers with home testing meters - High Cholesterol Message Board

I have two test-at-home cholesterol meters. One is from Lifestream and only measures total. The other is a newly acquired BioScanner 2000 and measures Total, HDL, and Trigs. With these readings, I can calculate LDL.

I have used the Lifestream for nearly a year with very good results. Today I did a side by side with my new BioScanner 2000 device.

The Lifestream can only read as low as 150 total. Today it read <150. The BioScanner read 125 for total. I then went on to do an HDL and Trigs. HDL was 43. My most recent lab work (two weeks ago) showed an HDL of the same 43, and Trigs was 113. This gives me a calculated LDL of 60.

My norm with no supplements or statin is around 240 total, 30 HDL and 168 ldl.

I take 20mg Zocor, 20 mg policosanol, fish oil, Citri-Cal, and olive oil whenever I use oil.

Just thought I'd weigh in on the new meter. I am pleased with its performance and it appears to be right on.

pcovers--How much does the BioScanner 2000 cost, and where did you get it? If the results are as reliable as they appear, then such a device may be a valuable tool for those who are trying to improve their lipid profile. This would enable people to closely monitor their progress either through dietary changes and/or nutritional supplements without having to spend a fortune running back and forth to the doctor just to see if what they're doing is working or not. I think that for many people, this would be a device worth having on hand.

I see on the homepage for the bioscanner systems that it is about $140 not counting consumable supplies.

In addition to what Arizona asked, did you purchase this on your own or did insurance pay for part of it? Did you find it less expensive from another sources? Do you purchase the consumable supplies from bioscanner directly?

Also, can you elaborate a bit on the capillary blood collection tube--how exactly is blood collection done?

That is about the price I paid as I recall. Then I purchased the strips for HDL, total, and Trigs. I am sure insurance would not cover it. I do not use the capillary device, just the standard pin ***** to get a drop of blood.
