Atkins promotes itself as a "way of life" and not a "diet." If you go off the eating plan you will find your weight loss not only stalls, but you may gain your weight back. The reason is that when you eliminate the carbs and sugars your body turns to your fat stores for energy and therefore you lose weight. If you go off the plan completely, your body will store those extra carbs as fat (like before) and will burn those for fuel.
What Atkins recommends is staying on the weight loss plan until you reach your goal weight, then gradually add carbs back in until you find the right amount of carbs you can injest and not gain weight. You only increase by 5 carbs per week.
For the most comprehensive information, read the Atkins "New" Diet Revolution book. It explains all I've said in detail. I have lost 16 lbs. of my total goal of 30 since January and I have a high metabolic resistance to weight loss (underactive thyroid). Nothing else have even remotely worked for me since I was diagnosed with thyroid problems in 1997. You will not only lose weight, but you will probably feel better than you've ever felt and rarely feel hungry.
Stay the course!
