High cholesterol causing low libido?

Hi, this is my first post on this board. My recent blood work shows that my total cholesterol is 268. My LDL is 204 and should be less than 100. I can't remember what my HDL is but it was normal and wasn't low. Anyway here is my question: Does having high cholesterol lower sex drive? I should point out that my testosterone is supposedly normal according to my blood work. I'm not on any medications. I was on Prozac for eight years, though. I know that it lowers testosterone (hence the sexual problems it causes), and I just read recently that it causes high cholesterol. I do have a family history of high cholesterol. However, I'm not interested in going on statins. For the most part, my diet is good and I work out five days a week. I do see that there's room for improvement for both, though, and I'm going to work on that. Anyway, back to my question, is it possible for high cholesterol to lower libido? Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Re: High cholesterol causing low libido?

Very high levels can effect men more than women. Probably over 300 + .Cholesterol is resposible for producing sex hormones. Many people suffer from sexual problems when their cholesterol is too low. Many researchers contend that higher HDL levels contribute to better sexual function. If high cholesterol is linked with any form of heart disease, sexual function will definitely be negatively effected.

Re: High cholesterol causing low libido?

Hey, thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it. I was beginning to wonder if anyone would respond. I just looked at my blood work results again, and I noticed that my HDL is 43 and the range is 40-59. Is that considered low even though it's in range? The endocrinologist said it was okay. However, I don't know if I should put much stock into what he says since he shoved me out of his office in less than five minutes and barely went over my blood work with me. Obviously, he's history, time for a new doctor.

Re: High cholesterol causing low libido?

Your numbers are not too bad to cause libido problems. In the past, most of the population with high cholesterol and higher blood pressure barely had any problems with libido and sexual function. Once we became patients with prescription drugs to lower cholesterol and high blood pressure, side effects including libido problems began to effect millions of people. So it is apparent now that a large number of drugs can effect sexual function. The answer to many has become VIAGRA. I have many friends and family who have very high cholesterol levels most of their lives, despite having very physical jobs and being very active. Some are married/re-married with children, new relationships etc...Most have never complained about libido problems in the past, until they started to lower cholesterol and take medications. This leads me to believe that higher cholesterol is not a problem with libido/sexual function. Medications appear to throw a wrench into normal fuctioning.

In regard to the HDL level of 43. The rule for HDL is the higher the better. The HDL is the good cholesterol. I think for men an HDL level in the higher 40's is considered a healthier level. Women should be in the high 40's to lower 50's for a healthy HDL level. Of course, lowering the LDL and Total also makes a big difference.

Re: High cholesterol causing low libido?

Ah, so maybe the low HDL is my problem? I'll work on lowering the other two. Thanks so much for your help. And, thank God for these boards. Trying to get a straight answer out of these doctors is like pulling teeth.
