Question For every 10mg of a statin drug, how much CoQ10 should you take with it?

Husband and I are taking 10mg of Simivestan a night, how much coQ10 mg's should be taken with this dosage? For those who have taken coQ10 along with statins and those who have not, have you noticed a difference? Does this really help? Any particular brand of CoQ10 recommended ? Thank you

Hi Tenacious,

From my readings, I believe that the intake of COq10 is not statin dose related. As almost everyone acts differently to drugs, it would be wise to take as below.

The human body starts to produce less CoQ10 in one's thirties. So if you are on statins/RYR in your 30s' - 40s' you need at least 100mg, going to 400mg a day when in one's 70+. Best to take it even if you are not on medication, as the body will certainly benefit from this vital natural supplement, where 30mg daily is recommended.

One should use 100% Japanese Kaneka (trans-isomer), ubiqunone/ubiquinol.

Or..... one could do as I did and get totally off statins with GREAT Cholesterol numbers, and GREAT Blood Pressure numbers, mostly through Diet and Exercise.

The best supplements and medicine in the world are Diet and Exercise. And, the best part, it doesn't cost extra to eat healthy!

I would love to get husband off statins, BUT he is already thin (only weighs 150), exercising 5 days a week for 20 minutes, plus working a job where he walks, and eating not much fat at all --has NOT helped his numbers, without meds -his Tri' are about 200, his # about 245, his LDL about 190 , his HDL about 38 with no statins. That makes his Ratio about 6 . With 10mg a day of simivestan and the same lifestyle , his numbers seem to be within range, so that is what we do. His Doc perscribed 40mg a day! But I won't allow him to take that much, I think that is overkill, especially when their is zero heart disease in the family before age 70.

I take 80 mg of lipitor a day , I would not be able to take any statin if it were not for
coq10 which I take 800 mg a day. this has helped alot with pain, My dr told me that what ever my body doesn't use, it will get rid of . My ldl was holding over 250 until I added 4000 mg fish oil a day, this was awesome!!! I dropped to 117 !! probably the best thing I have done to lower my cholesterol numbers!! I hate statins and have tried them all. the one that bothered me the least and worked the best was Baycol . I wish i could find it somewhere since they took it off the market in the US.

Re: For every 10mg of a statin drug, how much CoQ10 should you take with it?

Hi Mike,

800mg a day......Is your COq10 in the form of ubiquinone or ubiquinol?

Ubiquinone is badly absorbed and should be taken along with an oily substance.
If you are using this form of Coq10, then 100mg of the ubiquinol form of Coq10 will give you the equivalent of 600-800mg of the ubiquinone Coq10 and you will only need 1 capsule a day, which should work out much cheaper for you and be much more beneficial.

Research the difference between the two......and more importantly......the cost.

BTW: Only go for the original studied Kaneka CoQ10
