Question Zocor (Simvastatin) insomnia frequent night urination

I was only taking 5mg simvastatin. I stopped two days ago, and my insomnia has 1/2 way stopped. i get to sleep fine, but wake up at around 2am & can't return to sleep. I wake up to urinate, but can't return to sleep. Also before going to sleep when i lay down to read, i have to urinate quite frequently. Is simvastatin the only generic out there for cholorestrol meds? I do believe this med contributed to the insomnia, and maybe the frequent urination when i lay down? i dont' know. If this med affects kidneys, then maybe? How long does it stay in my system? Last two nights i didn't take it. Too bad because 5mg (1/2 pill) is a pretty low dose and it was helping my numbers improve.

Re: Zocor (Simvastatin) insomnia frequent night urination

I wasn't on that one, mine was another statin but I can tell you one thing, it kept me running to the bathroom all day and all night. Sudden frequent urges to go ALL the time and the power it came out with always stunned me, With one breath I was fine, the next breath I was about to wet on myself.. The day I stopped the statin drug, THAT STOPPED and hasn't happened since!

Find another way to lower your cholesterol if you buy into that. Statin drugs can ruin your life!

Re: Zocor (Simvastatin) insomnia frequent night urination

I stopped the simvastatin last week, and my insomnia is gone. The frequent urination is still there but I will see a urologist as I think that is a separate problem. I will try red rice yeast & CoQ10. Also, i've heard some good thinkgs about the statin Pravachol (sp?) ... might try that down the road in a low dose. That one is not supposed to go into the brain? My mom & sister take 10mg lipitor daily with no problems at all, so i guess some people find a lucky match, it's just a matter of finding out what is best for you.

Re: Zocor (Simvastatin) insomnia frequent night urination

LOL! I took 10mg without any problem too.... I thought.. Within 2 weeks of starting it, one day I sat down to lunch and was fine, when I started to get up, it felt like someone has slammed a sledge hammer into both of my knees and I lived with that kind of pain for the rest of the time I was on it... 5 to 6 years. Only when I got off of it and that pain suddenly stopped, did I realize what had caused it.. My knees have not bothered me since.. I don't know what other symptoms started then because it was so long ago and of all the problems I had on it, I associated with getting old and not the Lipitor...

I work with 2 guys also on Lipitor and both are looking at knee replacement surgery due to the pain in their knees.. I finally got one to at least cut back on his Lipitor and I could see right away that he was walking 100% better and he didn't even realize it until I asked him if he had quit/cut back the Lipitor.. When I asked him how his knees were doing he looked completely stunned! He hadn't even realized the pain was gone until I asked him how they felt..

Both of these guys also have mind/memory problems and do not realize it. Everybody else sees it but they don't.... if they do they are not admitting it, I know I wouldn't when mine started slipping..

Point here being that just because someone THINK they are not having problems (side effects) does not mean they are not. Both of these guys BOTH say they are not having a problem/side effect when I can clearly see they are!

As for your kidneys, I caution you to tread lightly with statins (of ANY kind) if you have ANY kidney problem. I have a friend that I am convinced is dying due to what statins have done to his kidneys and he has been off of them for about a year. If you think your frequent urges are cause by some other kidney problem, my bet is you are wrong.. The problem, whatever it is, is statin related (unless you had this problem prior to statins). My friends doctors have never admitted his was statin related and never will because to do so opens them up to a law suite.

Re: Zocor (Simvastatin) insomnia frequent night urination

I take 40 mg of simvastatin and every since taking it, I have had to get up and urinate through out the night. Doctor put me on muscle relaxers to help me get to sleep and stay asleep, but that didn't help; I still ended up waking up to go to the bathroom two or three times at night. Told my kidney specialist about always having to get up in the night to urinate and he prescribed Vesicare and then Detrol LA after my presciption drug plan quit covering Vesicare. The Detrol LA works great, but I never heard about simvastatin causing people to have to urinate through the night and losing sleep from it. My doctor had prescibed a different med for me, but my prescription drug plan didn't cover it. I now sleep through the night. I am going to check with my doctor and my new drug plan and see if something else will be covered and if my doctor will take me off of simvastatin.

Re: Zocor (Simvastatin) insomnia frequent night urination

I found out that the frequent urination I was having was due to anxiety, not the simivastin. I was only on 5mg. I no longer take that and now I take Red Rice Yeast, Fish oil, Niacin & CoQ10. My numbers are much better with RRY than they were with the Simivastin. My dr. gave me a prescription for the frequent night urination, but I've found over the counter AZO (for pain associated with UTIs) works even better to "calm" my bladder at night, for occasional use. After taking it for 1-2 nights, I'm good for a while.
