Is my bad cholestrol too low?

My doctor put me on 10 mg of Zetia and 10mg of Lipitor. My bad cholestrol previously had been 134. Now my readings ldl 57 hdl 80 don't know what trycl. were total cholestrol 157. I asked my doctor when he gave me the numbers and said on no that's great. Just want another opinion. Thanks

I don't know why your doc put you on those drugs with an LDL of 137. And now it's 57! Are you still taking the statins? Seems like way over the top drug pushing to me.

All the best,

Jen

With no underlying medical conditions, then the answer is.....yes.

Too low is by far worse than too high.

Yack.

Re: Is my bad cholestrol too low?

I didn't mention that I was on 10 mg of lipitor and bad cholestrol was still 134 and was then put on 20 mg and it did not come down, I was then put on 30 to no avail. He then went back to 10 mg of lipitor and added the zetia. First year the bad cholestrol was about 80 second year on this combination it was 57. My father died of a stroke due to high cholestrol and I take medication for high blood pressure, so I am at risk. Thanks for any in put

How low is "too low" for LDL in the absence of drugs or supplements?

Re: Is my bad cholestrol too low?

Hi tj

You have asked me this once before, which I thought that I had already answered.

Basically, there were centuries prior to medication for known Hypercholesterolaemia.......and only a couple of decades since.

There have also been centuries of documented Hypercholesterolaemia cases and studies.

Being in Europe, I suppose our libraries hold older archives than those of the States.

The most mentioned figure I have read is the TC figure of 160mg/dl. Below this 'line', is considered....too low, whether on or off medication.

Yack.

But what about LDL in particular? Most of what I have seen about whether cholesterol can be too low focuses on total cholesterol, rather than any of the components (LDL, VLDL, HDL). Those studies which have been mentioned in the context of whether LDL can be too low involve statin-lowered LDL, not low LDL without drugs. Or is the latter rare enough that medical researchers are not concerned enough to look into it?

Re: Is my bad cholestrol too low?

With ref. to my previous post TJ,
"There have also been centuries of documented Hypercholesterolaemia cases and studies."

What you seek does indeed exist, many are even stored on the world's largest medical science database site. I've read some of them, hence my saying "whether on or off medication."

Good luck.

Yack.

Re: Is my bad cholestrol too low?

Wouldn't "Hypercholesterolaemia" mean cholesterol "too high" (as opposed to "too low")? Of course that is studied a lot because it is a common problem.

Re: Is my bad cholestrol too low?

You are correct, so look for Hypocholesterolaemia instead......honestly!!!!
