Can someone please explain to me what LDL is versus calculated LDL? My LDL level on my current cholesterol reading came back as 157. My calculated LDL was 88. Which one am I supposed to pay attention to. I know 157 is bad, so is it the red yeast rice I am supposed to add to my supplements?
The less expensive cholesterol tests measure total, HDL, and triglycerides. LDL is then calculated as total - HDL - (triglycerides / 5). This is generally considered a reasonable approximation when triglycerides are not extremely high.
More expensive cholesterol tests measure LDL directly.
