New to this board. I am only 28yrs old and I have a family history particularly on my father's side with high cholesterol and Blood Pressure. My Doctor recommended getting a cholesterol test because of this.
LDL is really high. The nurse that called me over the phone with the results recommended Diet and Exercise for 3 months before thinking about getting on meds. I agreed. Before the test I actually had started dieting and exercising 1.5-2 months prior to the test and fasted for about 11.5 hours prior to the test.
However I didn't cut out red meat from my diet either. I mainly reduced sugar and calorie intake. This time I'm going to try an eliminate red meat and stick to fish and grilled chicken..also eat more vegetables and fruit.
Also would like to mention I am an alternative medicine enthusiast, but not against prescription drugs at all. I have taken Zoloft for anxiety for about 5 years, which has caused some weight gain. In college at 5'10" i was only about 140-145 pounds...now I am 168 pounds.
I also have been researching Pubmed.com a lot for clinical studies on various herbal/supplements that have shown to help lower cholesterol.
My current supplement list and this was before the cholesterol test, because I assumed of family history, I had the early workings of high cholesterol..are:
-GNC Mega Men daily Vitamin
-Vitamin D 4,000iu daily in addition to vitamin.
-Alpha Lipoic Acid
-Pantethine 600mg ------been on 1 month only prior to test
-Artichoke Extract 800mg-----been on 1 month only prior to test
-Green tea Extract-------Did not take regularly
-CoQ10 (Ubiquinol) 50mg
-Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega Fish oil (1,800mg total DHA/EPA daily)
-Doctor's Best Tocotrienols 125mg--been on 1 month only prior to test
Several of these are supposed to help with cholesterol, but not sure how long they had to work since only taking some of them 1 month prior to the cholesterol test.
The only things I can think of to do is diet and exercise and then maybe try Red yeast extract later if my next blood test comes back high before jumping on the prescription Statin bandwagon.
Also wanted to add that in Indian medicine culture the Amla Fruit(Indian Goose berry) has been shown in two experiments to lower LDL and raise HDL. But it only works for as long as you take it. I plan on adding this to my supplement list very soon. I will get it from Life Extension "Advanced Lipid" supplement that has it in it combined with tea Theaflavins to reduce LDL oxidation.
Next test I'd also like to test for oxidized LDL..Do i need to ask for a specific test that covers oxLDL?
I appreciate any feedback or advice on my test numbers and what not.
I am going to try adding The Amla extract(goose berry), but I have doubts about getting my numbers low enough with it. I have a feeling I'll end up being on RYR or a prescription statin like Lipitor.
My father has high cholesterol and so did his mother. I believe both of theirs before medicine were over 300 total cholesterol. My father is currently on Lovastatin, which from what I understand is also in RYR at a lower dose and in a natural form. He told me Lovastatin was the only statin that didn't cause him problems, but said some others he tried worked better at bringing his numbers down.
I also understand I will need to up my coq10 dosage to 100 or 200mg if I get on RYR or a full blown statin since they tend to deplete coq10 levels. I also take a Kaneka Ubiquinol coq10. I currently get mine from Life Extension because it has another additive to further enhance absorption, but I have also used GNC brand before too. I believe GNC carries a Kaneka coq10 as well.
I've been exercising regularly the past couple months but I need to keep it up for life I guess now. Also I was only just reducing sugar and calories, but I see now I need to cut out red meats and only eat lean grilled chicken, fish and veggies.
Thanks for the feedback. I will post my next lab results in 3 months here too.
Started Crestor 10mg almost 2 weeks ago. Will see how it goes. So far only sideeffect is some upset stomach. Seems to be getting better though. No muscle pains to speak of yet. Hopefully since I'm only 28 and don't take anything else and am not on a high dosage I'll be ok. I got a months worth of sample packs from my doctor who said to try it and if I don't have any issues just call back for a script.
Will post again with updated numbers when it's time.
Know how you feel. My blood pressure was so high. My left side of body, and face became numb. Went to a doctor, and they told me it could sign of a bad medical conditition. Come back in two weeks if it doesn't go away. Went to another doctor, and was put on high blood pressure. They told me if I would have waited to weeks. Probably would have had a stroke, or heart attack.
Guess, the other people wanted me dead. In order to save money in new health system. When your dead, they save alot of money. Starting to like Obama health care system. Let the person die. Then you don't have tp spend money on medical test, medications, or spend money on seeing a doctor. The great news the funneral homes will make money.
also wanted to mention I did not change my diet and have not been exercising at all the past three months on Crestor. So my numbers are strictly from Crestor alone. I will try and start exercising asap and try and get my HDL up to 60+ if possible. Also have been of fish oil for 2-3 weeks before test. Need to go back on that too as it will help with the HDL.
Only supplements taken during past 3 months were:
-GNC mega mens vitamins
-Fish oil 1000mg( ran out and didnt get more 3 weeks before test)
-CoQ10 Ubiquinol 100mg GNC
-Vitamin D3 4000mg daily
-Idebenone 190mg daily
