simvastatin and atvorstatin

My GP has decided to change my statins from simvastatin to atorvastatin because i have complained of muscle pain. Has anyone been through the same thing and did atorvastatin improve things? (apparently atorvastatin are much more expensive and a better statin)

Re: simvastatin and atvorstatin

Usually if you have muscle pain with one statin you will experience the same side effects with another. Some studies have shown that statins are of little use for women. Did you have diabetes prior to being prescribed statins or develop it after taking the medication?

Dewing, you posted a few years back that you were having left neck, shoulder and arm pain. The thread was closed so I couldn't reply. Can you tell me what eventually happened? Did you have surgery or did PT work?

Re: simvastatin and atvorstatin

I completely agree-if you are one of the many that have muscle pain with one statin, you are very likely to have it to some degree with all of them. I have been on every statin over the past 20 years (except Crestor-I drew a line in the sand there) and I have had problems with all of them.

Muscle pain seems to come first......followed by digestive upset and or stomach aches-and then comes the tiredness. Those are my top three. The statin that has caused me the least amount of problems is Pravachol or pravastatin. It is considered to be one of the "weaker" statins. That said, I was taking 20 mg and had to cut back to 10mg of pravastatin because of the issues mentioned.

I'm hoping by revamping my diet...and the 10mg of pravastain, that I can get the numbers much better than they are now-even if not where my doctor thinks they should be.

Maybe your Dr. would agree to let you try a "weaker" statin first. Good luck.

Re: simvastatin and atvorstatin

I found that Crestor caused leg pain, simvastatin did not give me the numbers I needed so I went back to atorvastatin once it became generic.
No pain, good numbers $10/month.
I've been on Lipiitor (atorvastatin) for 15 years now and keep my LDL's in the 60's.

That and allopurinol are my miracle meds/
