Question High Blood Pressure & Buzzing in Ears??

I went to the ear Dr. this week because my ears were ringing (buzzing) really loud for several days. My blood pressure was 147/99. Normally it's 122/80. Today I checked and it was 132/90. I have never had a problem before and am 39 years old. I asked if they were ringing because of the blood pressure and he said no that probably my blood pressure was high because I was bothered by the noise in my head. I will be having some hearing test next week. But I was wondering if any of you out there has ever had this ringing when their blood pressure was really high. It sounds like a plane flying over or like a heating unit compressor. I also had a bad headache with the noise. Today the noise is gone. I would appreciate any thoughts. Thanks.

Re: High Blood Pressure & Buzzing in Ears??

I've not seen any references to tinnitus (ringing in the ears) as a symptom of hypertension. It could be some sort of an infection in the ENT (ear, nose, throat) system that may be causing this, in which case one of the body's responses when fighting an infection is an increase in blood pressure (even a common cold/flu can cause spikes in BP for some people). Or it could be some imbalance within the hearing system that is causing the ringing, which is why your doctor is sending you for hearing tests. Anyhow, it's good news that the noise is gone today - are you on any medications for this currently, whether BP medication or antibiotics? Has your sense of balance been affected since this began? Have you checked your BP today?

Headache is associated with hypertension as one of its symptoms when BP is quite high. But for many people, hypertension has no physical symptoms that you can feel.

In your case, I think it wise not to worry about it too much until all other causes have been ruled out.

Re: High Blood Pressure & Buzzing in Ears??

My buzzing is back this morning along with the headache. I have not been dizzy at all. Just a sense of a weird kind of feeling in my head. I have not checked my BP today yet. I will have to go somewhere to do that later. Thanks so much for replying.

Re: High Blood Pressure & Buzzing in Ears??

Are you on any medication now for this since your last visit to the doctor? If you mental state is not optimal today, ie. you're constantly worried about what's causing your present condition or that you are worried that your BP will be high when you take it, my advise is not to take your BP! It will most likely be a self-fulfilling prophecy!

Does the headache or ringing go away if you take an aspirin or painkiller? (assuming you're not allergic to aspirins?)

I still don't think you've got anything to worry about until the proper tests are done, if it's any comfort.

Re: High Blood Pressure & Buzzing in Ears??

I am not on any meds. This afternoon my BP was 142/100. Later it was 132/84. I am going to keep a check on it for the next few days. Could be that this buzzing in my ears is just aggravating it. The headache comes and goes, but I try not to take anything for it unless I have to. Thanks.

My mother side of the family has suffered with high BP and hypertension and they all complained about the buzzing in the ears. I have high BP but have never had the buzzing but I remember as a child my mom and my grandmom complaining of that...Lisa
