Hi, I have been getting really bad depression due to being having an obsessive personality. I spoke to the doc yesterday he told me to come of the meds straight away no tapering them off, just stopping all together. I have an appointment next week to review the situation and to see if i require other meds.

Anyway how long does it usually take for the BP to go back up after stopping the meds. I never took my last pill before bed last night and me readings are still ok.

Maybe someone more experienced with this can help on the amount of time before your BP shows increase.

However, my main concern for you going "cold turkey" is that, abruptly stopping a beta blocker can and very well most likely cause you to experience tachycardia (rapid heart beat), My doctor at least went from 50 mgs to 25 mgs and I had the tachycardia of around 120 bpm for about a week, before it would start returning to normal. I can only imagine what 50 cold turkey would do.

My BP is still around 137/80 which is normal for me, but i admit my pulse rate has gone from 56 to 85ish now.

I am taking my BP regularly throughout the day just to be sure it doesn't get sill readings.

Crabbyroads, you are definitely right. I stopped cold turkey with the toprol xl and within one week my bp shot up to 208/125 and my pulse shot up to 113. All in a matter of one week. i called my dr and he was upset with me. I did not know i was to wean myself from this drug, i just wanted the pain to stop in my back.

i was later told in ER that when you stop a med, it is customary to also take zantac or the likes to help the stomach.

I asked my doc whether i should be weaning off of the meds. He said if i was a person of 65yrs he would say yes, but as i am 30yrs old my body is young enough to cope with it.

Not that i would want to go back on the meds, but i would never want to risk my health by neglecting to take meds. I have an appointment with the doc next tuesday (only stopped the meds yesterday), i would like to suggest staying off the meds if my BP has not risen. I read 137/80 with meds and am currently reading these figures at present. My concern is that would my appointment be to early to determine whether my BP is going to spike, it was the only appointment i could get for a month. But if i make him agree to no meds would my BP then spike after seeing him as it was too early to determine if my BP is truely ok.
