Red face 208/102 can it be anxiety?

I was diagnosed with hypertension 3 months ago, Im 34 ,a smoker and have bad anxiety,I was put on 50mg Toprol once a day, my blood pressure has been about 130/80 on the average lately,Tuesday night I went to the E.R. with really bad leg pain ,thinking I had a blood clot possibly, when i got there they took my bp it was 208/102 and heart rate was 120 I hate hospitals and was very nervous , could I have possibly brought my bp up that high with anxiety or do I need a stronger medication?Im very worried I go back to my Dr. tomorrow but I dont know if I need anxiety pills or more bp pills .

Re: 208/102 can it be anxiety?

Yes! When I was diagnosed 20 months ago, I had 190/100 & was highly anxious. I am the same age as you. They prescibed the Toprol to slow down your heart rate, but they should do blood tests to see if there is a secondary cause. If not, then it could be white-coat-anxiety. They should treat the HBP, but treat the anxiety as well. What did they give you for that??? More B/P pills means side-effects... trust me. You don't want to have a stroke or heart attack, so they may prescibe more. It is your choice. Just like you I get scared at doctors+, but it would help if more looked into the underlying cause. My only vice like you is that I smoke. I don't drink anymore.

20 Months later, my average B/P is 116/66 or so. I'm on Atenolol (was on Toprol before, but couldn't deal with the side-effects), Lotrel & Xanax for the anxiety.

Kim, toprol xl can cause circulatory problems. I was given toprol xl by a nurse practioner with out her even doing blood work. Toprol xl is used when a person is a smoker that is what my dr told me. i stopped taking toprol xl this yr (ithink it was spring of this yr) bcuz i could not stand the side effects.

Re: 208/102 can it be anxiety?

jtu91952,I was given toprol without bloodwork also, I wonder if thats what could be causing my leg pains, they are constantly aching for the last two weeks, other than that I havent had any other side effects yet,I mentioned it to the dr. today and he didnt seem to think it had anything to do with the toprol.I dont know ,I guess I will give it a little longer to see if they go away.

Re: 208/102 can it be anxiety?

Toprol has a lot of side-effects as do most beta-blockers. Docs. from my experience will say that they are good meds., but I can't tolerate them as well. Yes I got cramps from them, everything ranging from leg cramps to stomach cramps & I still get stomach cramps from Atenolol. I'm going next week to get off of this...
