Is This Normal???

Walked into Winn Dixie this morning to take my B/P. Took my Lotrel 5/20 & Atenolol 100 MGS at 7:30 or so. I know that I need to buy a regular machine, so I don't have to do this.

1st Reading 134/84
2nd Reading 126/77
3rd Reading 119/73
4th Reading 120/73

In 15 minutes my Systolic dropped 14 points & my Diastolic dropped 11. This always happens...

OMG, your readings are from STORE machines? I've always found that those machines will cause a little bit of "white-coat" like symptoms for me - especially, when the store is crowded. Or, even worse, if my wife is standing over my shoulders watching. You definitely need to get a home machine.

And, yes, it is normal for your BP to drop like that. You are probably just getting more relaxed and comfortable the longer you are in the store.

Re: Is This Normal???

Yeah, sorry Pal, but I have done it that way in CVS, Eckerds, Walgreens, Winn Dixie+++. I usually get the same readings. At CVS & Publix, the Diastolic will be lower. I know that when I get consistent readings at different machines they can't all be wrong.

Re: Is This Normal???

I'm just concerned with my readings whether the doc. will allow me to wean. They aren't really that bad.

Re: Is This Normal???

Make sure you are giving yourself enough time between readings. If you take them to close they will be lower as the artery in your arm hasn't had time to get back to normal. The cuff squeezes it and it has to have time to get to it's normal position. A few minutes should be o:k.

Re: Is This Normal???

I usually give it 5 minutes or so. This is normal for me to have a high 1st reading & the subsequent readings go down.

Re: Is This Normal???

using those store machines like that like the last poster said can tell you something way different, im 22 years old and the cheapo wal mart ones tell me that my bp is at 145 over 85...im 5' 10" 195 pounds...while the one at mjiers is wayyyyy better gives me 120 over 70 on average...

Lordy Axe,

The Band MUST be successful enough to allow you to buy your own BP machine...

I've bought several and I've never had a hit song!

OK, let's get you off the pot....STOP TAKING ALL DRUGS and record your BP twice a day (separated by 12 hours)...take 3 readings each time and drop the highs and lows....record the middle value. (drop high systolic low systolic and high and low diastolic- record what's left!)

Then you'll know what you need!

Re: Is This Normal???

Over the weekend I went like 28 hours in between meds. All I took was 1 MG of Xanax. My B/P was 114/66. I think that I'm getting to realize what anxiety can do...

Re: Is This Normal???

If I had a home monitor, I would drive my G/F nuts. I take it about 15 times a month already. I would take it a lot more. It always averages right around the same. 1st reading will be 127/76- 134/83 when I go into the store. By the 3rd reading it is 114-116/64-68 usually. Off of the meds., I have no idea. Like I said I did go 28 hours or so between meds & it was 114/66 this weekend.

Re: Is This Normal???

Also, it is dangerous to quit Atenolol cold turkey..... I like your idea though.
