High Blood pressure (sometimes) and Resperate - High & Low Blood Pressure Message Board

Does anyone else have this problem? When I'm relaxed, usually before bed, I take my blood pressure and its great. Like 117/78. When I awake in the morning after a night of lousy sleep. it's way up like 165/100. Then during the day it will be sometimes 170/105 then go down to 120/80. My doctor is concerned but I think it's basically due to anxiety because when I'm relaxed it's way down. Wouldn't your blood pressure always be high if it's chronic and not anxiety? I've been on 150mg of Desipramine a day which I know adds to the blood pressure. I do not want to take any more drugs and have heard about the Resperate. Does anyone have any experience with it and does it work. Thanks.

It's tough to measure for anxiety. Your case sounds like anxiety. HBP is when your B/P is elevated even when you are relaxed & for a good portion of the day. The best way to do it would a 24 hour ambulatory machine, but it seems that only specialists will recommend that. Most GP's today see a couple of elevated reading & prescribe. It's easy, they get more appointments & kick-backs, which means more $'s. With anxiety they could find the med. that works for you or refer you out, which means no $'s for them. Be careful though, because a lot of psychiatrists won't prescribe the meds. that really help like Xanax+. They are on an SSRI kick with meds. like Paxil. If you want to feel like you have a 5 day stomach flu, I would highly recommend Paxil.

There is some research that sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure. You say you awake with high bp after a lousy night's sleep. Could your poor sleep be due to sleep apnea? If so, that might account for the elevated bp.

I bought the Resperate and experienced anxiety problems from using it. I called the company and explained what was happening and they could offer no explanation but allowed me to return the unit with no problems.
I would say it is worth a try because this company definitely backs up their product.
BTW, I don't think checking your BP upon rising is a wise thing. Most books recommend you wait at least an hour.

I think that taking your B/P once or twice a week at most is enough after monitoring it for a few months. It is a bad obsession & I am personally going to make an effort to stop the habit. I have enough reading for 10 lifeftimes over the last 21 months.
