after taking meds for 5 months different new side effects 300mg avapro ,verepamil 150 mg both 1 x a ay. now getting edema[swelling in the feet]will call dr. on mon. morning. took water pills but stopped ,did not work. +[dry mouth/numbing of feet.] any thoughts idears etc. rsvp. thanks all. happy/healthy new year to all.
Hi tbear, i took avapro 150mgs but was allergic to it so had to stop taking it after a few months. I think the swelling comes from verapamil. I take 360 mgs of verapamil and the side effect that im having is breast pain.
As JTU mentioned, the swelling (edema) of your feet is a well known side effect of calcium channel blockers (verapamil et al). I would think the sensation of numbness may be due to the edema.
Verapamil and the other CCB'swill very often cause swollen ankles and feet. I got the same effect with amlodipine (Norvasc.) I really hated the effect of non-disappearing sock lines.
Well adding water pills would work but I think the better choice it to eliminate the cause. Ask your doctor for a different class of drugs. Maybe water pills INSTEAD of the channel blockers.
Diuretics work pretty well with ARB's like avapro. Perhaps a very small dose of thiazide might avoid the dry mouth, but if you are getting paresthesia from the water pills your doctor will have to get creative?
Beta blockers and ARB's aren't a great combination, but perhaps worth a shot?
Can you get CLOSE to enough control with the Avapro alone?
Then there's the CHANCE that one of the other channel blockers (amlodipine, nifedipine) might not cause edema.
(I think living with edema is out of the question.)

I agree with you 100% here. Adding a drug to eliminate a side-effect for another drug makes absolutely no sense. I also recall reading somewhere that a diuretic is not very effective in reducing edema caused by a CCB. ACEs and ARBs normally give the best results. However, since you are already on an ARB, I think you need to ditch the verapamil.

Yep, bad combo. I wouldn't want to be on that combo.

Combine with a low sodium diet should work very well.

This is very true. However, I'd expect the edema problem to be worse with amlodipine and nifedipine. Diltiazem (Cardizem) might be a better choice.

dr. was on vacation till next week [appoint oin 1/13] nurse prac. put me on verelan pm 300mg x 1.i was on this originally but My HMO wouldn't pay for such.when on it i had no side effects. any thinking on such.etc.thanks all.
