Toprol xl and avapro

Right now I take toprol xl 2oo mg and avapro 300mg. Was taking 150 mg of avapro. My bloodpressure still runs about 178/ 89, and sometimes higher. It wasn't until the Dr. doubled my mg of my avapro that I started having dizzy spells, practically 24/7. Could doubling the medicines have given me these dizzy spells. I have asked the dr. to maybe consider changing my meds. but she don't seem to want to do it.

Re: Toprol xl and avapro

I took toprol xl 100 mgs and avapro 150 mgs. Both were bad meds for me. I was always dizzy on avapro and had an allergic reaction on it. Face swelling, itching, and hives. However, toprol xl is still the worst bp med i've ever taken. And it didn't even lower my bp. It did help with the pulse.

This is not a good combination. Avapro + diuretic (otherwise known as Avalide) is a much more logical combo.

Yes, this is high. But, is this a doctor office or home measurement?

Again, make sure we are talking about home measurements here. Dizzy spells are more typically associated with low blood pressure. Many folks with "white coat" do really have high blood pressure. But, the meds don't necessarily help with the "white coat" aspect. And, the doctor can continue piling on the drugs not knowing what your "true" BP really is.

Sounds like it's time to change doctors.

Re: Toprol xl and avapro

I get dizzy on 100 MGS of Atenolol & 5/20 of Lotrel. Never got dizzy before the meds. It happens from time to time along with many other side-effects. Have an appointment with a specialist on 2/10. Just plain tired of the side effects. B/P was 116/65 yesterday & felt great. Today I woke up with an upset stomach & feel like I have no desire to do much at work. Typical work week for me. Some days are fine & 3-4 days a week I will have some sort of side effect whether it is my stomach, dizziness, flushing, lack of motivation, short term memory loss. I just can't deal with these meds. anymore, so I'm going to a specialist. At 34, it ridiculous to feel this way.

Re: Toprol xl and avapro

I took Toprol XL and it was very bad for me. It actually raised my average blood pressure, and give me blood pressure and heartrate spikes up in the dangerous range.

If your home relaxed readings are uniformly high, then what you are taking isn't working and you need to try something else. Being dizzy all the time is also not acceptable, and again you need to try something else. Insist on alternatives with your doctor, or find a doctor who is willing to work with you.

Whatever you do, don't just stop taking the Toprol. You need to slowly wean off that drug to avoid dangerous blood pressure rebound.

The docs. never told me this on 100 MGS of Toprol, which was switched to Atenolol. I swear Atenolol is actually worse. They are just meds. that need to researched a lot more before being put on the market along with Altace & Lotrel!!!! No one should experience the side-effects that I have gone through. I don't believe the trial #'s that they have either. Maybe if someone is taking .0006 MGS of these drugs they won't have side-effects.

Re: Toprol xl and avapro

I think I'm going to have to change dr.'s. I went today and my b/p was 192/92 . I just went for bloodwork, and when I said something to the nurse about getting my b/p menicine change she just said the dr. wasn't in and wouldn't be in till Monday.
Now my guestion is, Is there any kind of dr. that specilizes in this field? Do they have a certain title they go by? I'm really starting to feel helpless with this dr. and also somewhat scared.

Re: Toprol xl and avapro

I am also getting scared using my new cardio. Today my bp was 235/110. She added norvasc 5mgs to my verapamil 240 and lasix 20 mgs. She did not tell me how long it would take to see any results.

235/110 is very high, i have no pain or aches but im concerned. I asked her if i should go to the er when it rose that high and she said no, get the after care ph# from the receptionist. Well the clerk didn't know what i was talking about.

Re: Toprol xl and avapro

jtu,
Don't you think you should go to the ER anyway? That is awfully high. Has anyone ever mentioned clonidine for lowering extrenely HBP? My cardio gave me some and told me to take one if my BP went above 150. It loweres BP in about 30 min.

Re: Toprol xl and avapro

Hi Cassie, yes my cardio mentioned it but she won't prescribe it bcuz she says i stop taking meds too much. Although i promised i wouldn't stop taking clonidine abruptly, she gave me norvasc 5 mgs and im already taking verapamil 240, lasix 20mgs

My bp finally did come down to 163/84 but that's bcuz i rested for a couple of hrs.

Re: Toprol xl and avapro

My pharmacist who is also a doctor took my B/P to make sure it matches the machine. I'm 34 & 150 pounds & he couldn't understand why I was on Lotrel & Atenolol. My B/P was 108/58 or so. He said that he thought that I was over-medicated & that the less pills that one takes the better. He said that he would personally talk to my doctor & that it was ridiculous that I was on so much of these meds. He said that the side-effects could be pretty bad at high doses. He said that I should be on a low dose on one med. & monitor from there. He is also a doctor, so he just confirmed what I thought.

I think I'm going to have to change dr.'s. I went today and my b/p was 192/92 . I just went for bloodwork, and when I said something to the nurse about getting my b/p menicine change she just said the dr. wasn't in and wouldn't be in till Monday.

Yes, there are B/P specialists that also specialize in nephrology usually. Going to one in 1 month to get off of these meds. or reduce them a lot. They usually do 24 hour monitoring, which is out-patient. It can give a more accurate feel of what your real B/P is.
