Can hctz at 25 mg cause higher glucose readings in your blood work . The few places I have looked say it can .

Re: HCTZ and higher glucose levels

Most definitely! I was on hctz for over 4 yrs and w/o my knowledge my glucose a1c reading steadily climbed from 5. something to 10.9. When i discovered an article in my Diabetes Interviewer, stating diabetics(me) should not take hctz due to higher glucose and cholesterol readings, i stopped the pill.

However, i've since been given lasix. Some on this board says lasix can increase the cholesterol. Since stopping hctz my glucose a1c has dropped to 7.5 and hopefully it will go back to 5.0.

Re: HCTZ and higher glucose levels

I'm not convinced that Lotrel & Atenolol don't raise those glucose levels either. I am 5' 11" 150 male. My glucose is 103, even though I don't eat sweets.... It doesn't make any sense. 110 is pre-diabetes, so I am alright for now, but the meds. are ruining my health more than helping me.

There is research that says diuretics should not be the first line of medication for people less than 60 because of the increased risk for diabetes.

Re: HCTZ and higher glucose levels

I was on Hyzaar 100/25mg (it is a combination drug of Cozaar and HCTZ) for over 5 yrs and my blood glucose always remained on the low side. I have read that diuretics can raise the glucose levels though and now that I'm on Lasix and under 60 I make sure the doctor orders a glucose level in addition to checking my electrolytes every month.

I believe that Lasix raises the cholesterol levels though. I never had a cholesterol problem until I started taking it and now I'm on Lipitor. My cholesterol is only 229 but it is much higher than the 180 it was in June of 2004.
