With my BP going up and down and wondering what the heck I'm doing to make it go up. I pretty much have "changed my lifestyle" as recommended to lower my BP. I have cut out all caffeine for over 9 years, cut down on salt where everything tastes too salty to me..and exercise.
Now, after visiting the Anxiety board - could I have anxiety? My BP seems to get like this during too much stress at work - actually being in a meeting where everyone beats down on the IT Manager (me!). I also get anxious and like this when I hear of bad things and worry about it with myself and family. For example a friend of mine at work's husband died of a heart attack due to hypertension. I couldn't even go to the funeral because I was so sick with my BP running really high!
I asked my doc if that could be anxiety but....she doesn't want to even mention that. Is she not looking into that because she thinks I'm going after stress leave? Because I absolutly don't want that. But it could be anxiety.

They never want to mention anxiety. Anxiety can be a cause of elevated #'s. It can cause High Blood Pressure when one doesn't truly have High Blood Pressure. She isn't looking into to it because:
A) She wants you to come in for more appointments. More appointments on miserable B/P meds. mean more $'s.
B) She doesn't want to prescribe meds. for anxiety, unless they make you feel like junk like Paxil probably.
Could be anxiety. Does your doctor give any reason why she won't consider anxiety? Not to even give you a trial prescription?
I am 48, and while I don't think I am menopausal yet, I have been visiting that board. A common complaint there is anxiety related to hormonal fluctuations in the perimenopausal state. If you are 35+, you might want to check out that board.
Great point Chali. Off of meds. my B/P would be around 125/75 or so right now. Instead, it is 110/66 with xanax. A big big difference. B/P meds. don't control it nearly this well.
I don't know why they don't look into it. I just wish this will all go away! Now that I'm taking the diuretic, my heart feels as if it is skipping beats again! What is going on???
Axe, until you have tried going without meds, you don't know what your bp would be now. You know what it used to be before meds, and what it is while you are on meds, that's all. Are you currently off the two bp meds you were taking, in addition to your Xanax?

This is true, After taking meds this long you may find your BP to be higher without the meds than it was previously. Won't know till you try though.

Yes that is what I am taking. On Atenolol it brings my pulse in the 50's, high 40's. I take the Xanax, because it controls B/P better than any of the meds. I have tried this. It is usually a 12 point difference on the Systolic & 6-8 points on the diastolic. Atenolol is the worst and I'm not sure that Lotrel is better. Going to a specialist on 2/10. Enough is enough already. Being 34 and miserable on meds. is no way to live. The xanax is the only thing that helps.

I keep telling my doc that and she doesn't seem to think that is the cause. I am 37 and my periods are irregular. I keep telling her this happens everytime I go without it for over 2 months. When I am on my run with it regular for a few months, my BP is fine. Thank you, I will check out that board.
Geez.....I'm sick of this!

Some GP's refuse to admit that BP can be caused by anxiety. They don't like to prescribe benzos like Xanax that actually work for anxiety (in my case), but would prescibe Paxil, in addition to the B/P meds. Paxil like most SSRI's are the worst for me. I felt like I had a 5 day stomach flu that was the worst. I couldn't work. The bottom line is that anxiety can cause high blood pressure.

Is XANAX a (I call it) DESIGNER drug? Because I even hate dealing with the drug plans. Generic everything!!!
Yes I know about the meds. Today I feel great. The 1st day out of a few. I hate the meds. as well. Anxiety can play a big role & you need someone who take that seriously.
