We have a very close friend of the family who has been hospitalized for 3 days. His symptoms were severe internal back pain below his rib cage and severe vomiting attacks when the pain occurs.
He is quite overweight and has suffered from chronic hypertension for a number of years. Just recently he lost 30+ lbs and got his b/p under control. But with these attacks, his BP is also going up. I know that could be from pain.
They have run a battery of tests, and all they can tell him is he has a 4 cm cyst on one kidney and they detected some calcification at one point. By today, though, they are saying the calcification is gone. Apparently they don't think the cyst is dangerous or should be causing the symptoms.
They were about to discharge him from the hospital today saying ''we can't really find anything" when he was hit with another pain/vomiting attack with dangerously high BP (200's/100's) that has lasted all day.
I have done some research and am worried that renal artery stenosis may have been his problem all along, and now he's in kidney failure or something.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be or have similar experiences?

Have they done a renal scan to check renal function? Could he have kidney stones?
I have an office co-worker who had galbladder stones and the pain and vomiting sounded similar to what she had. Don't know if it made her blood pressure go up. She isn't hypertensive.
I don't know if the pain location is too high for an intestinal obstruction, but that could cause pain and vomiting.
I've had my bp go as high as 236/110 but my cardio didn't see that as a problem. I on the other hand was quite concerned. For some unknown reason, my bp seems to not go below 141/72. I don't have any symptoms, but i can feel a pain in my the back where the kidneys are located. It is a dull throbbing pain.
I've been on norvasc for a couple of wks and my bp has come down to 150/80 but that's not good enough.
BTW, when i had the vomiting and pain under the rib cage, it turned out to be my pancreas.

Well, I did find out that his gall bladder tests were all normal, and he doesn't seem to have any detectable kidney stones. They are doing endoscopy, and all the other "oscopies" today to try to see as much as they can.
I'd imagine they've done blood tests. I just don't know all the details as I'm 1000 miles away right now and am getting information second hand.

Could also be a pinched nerve, at least once a year i do something to my back, just happened again the other day, my kidney region on one side hurts & also my hip, knee, & testicle on that side (not aways the same side).
If its bad enough the testicle pain makes me want to throw up, the doc gave me some pain meds for it but I hate to take them if I dont have to because then I cant drive, It goes away after a week or so (so far)
Whenever this happens my BP is all over the place, probably due to the pain
