Can anyone tell me if there is anything i should avoid whilst carrying out a 24hr urine test?? Should i not drink alcohol before or during this period, what about spicy foods etc...... Anything really that i need to know prior to carrying out this test, i would hate to have to repeat it because i did something wrong.
Ask your doctor. I did some web research which suggested lots of foods and drugs you should not take in preparation. I asked my doctor and she told me there wasn't anything to avoid. So ask your doctor and see which camp they fall in.
For me it was 30 years ago, but as I recall the BIG no-no was caffeine. The tests were for vanillamandelic acid and something called close to 5-HIAA??? or something like that!
Basically, they are looking for extra outpourings of adrenal tumors or irregularities!
I'd also avoid alcohol and any stimulants like decongestants.
As suggested, it's best to double check with your own doctor on this but
my sister had the 24-hour test for urinary catecholamines (hormones) looking for possible adrenal gland problems and was told to avoid [for 2-3 days before the urine collection]:
Caffeine (coffee, tea, cocoa, and chocolate).
Bananas, walnuts, avocados, cheese, beer, and red wine. (they contain nitrogen substances and apparently it's advisable to avoid)
Vanilla extract. (don't know why!!)
Also, obviously your doctor should know if you are taking any over-the-counter meds or other prescribed meds he/she may not know about.
