Target Heart Rate

Hi! I went in to see my Dr. on Thurs. and he thought it best that I stop taking my atenolol (25mg) because I've been running lately and he said my heart is strong now. I've been on it for about a year and a half.

So, during my appt. he asked what my heart rate is normally when I run. I never check it so I wasn't sure. I am 28, female, weigh 110 and exercise regularly. Well, I checked it that night and it was around 160. Over the weekend, however, it was 185. My blood pressure seemed normal though. I called and left a message this morning for them to call me back but I haven't heard anything yet. This just seems high to me. Does anyone know? Also, does it have a connection to me stopping my pill?

Re: Target Heart Rate

Atenolol is a beta blocker. You should not just stop taking it, but rather wean off it slowly by cutting down to half the amount for several days, then going to either 1/2 of that or an every other day dosing for a few days. I am constantly amazed by the number of doctors who should know better but don't. Your heart rate is high - and sounds like rebound from suddenly stopping atenolol. Be more insistant in trying to get a hold of your doctor.

Re: Target Heart Rate

Thanks! I know I thought that was strange that he said to just stop taking it???? He's a wonderful doctor though so of course, I trust him. He said that only because it is a low amount that I take. They called back and the nurse said that it is okay to just go ahead and exercise but to call if I have any chest pains. Chest pains????????
