I have been on Toprol XL 100mg and Diovan HCT 12.5mg (1 each a day) for 5 years. BP has usually been 122/78 but when I go to the Doc's office it is sky high. For the last 3 months I have been watching my diet, and walking more.
Lost 10 lbs and BP is now 112/72 - 107/69. has been for 12 weeks.
Is it likely that Doc can help me wean off meds with those readings?
How high was your bp when you got put on the meds? I would guess that you may be able to cut down the dosage, but unless you were borderline to begin with, you probably won't be able to go off them completely.
Thanks for your quick reply, appreciate it!
my BP was 160/86 at Doc's office.(1st time visit) she said that was too high and put me on these 2 meds. at the time I didn't really know anything about HPB so went along with it........... I have always had high reading at Doc's office. Other Docs since have "muttered" about being put on these so quick with only a couple of readings, but as my BP is high at the office visit they just say "keep taking the meds"
You really need to get a home monitor and check your resting bp 3 or 4 times a day for several weeks. Many people have what is called "white coat syndrome", where their bp is elevated in the doctor's office due to nervousness. Yea, you probably should have had several readings before being prescribed medication. And you should have been prescribed only one med to start with, rather than two.
If you get a good pb monitor (ask your doctor or pharmacist), monitor your bp over several weeks and the numbers are low, take them to your doctor and ask about cutting back on your meds. You might be able to go off the meds, or one of them at least. Toprol has to be weaned off of to avoid rebound hypertension.
I have a BP monitor at home, been checking my BP several times a day for a few years now. the readings I have had in the last 3 months (with diet changes) are now, 106/69,108/72,116/71,116/72,106/71,107/69
Went to Doc today, she is going to help me wean off the toprolxL first.
I will check my BP as usual to see if there are any changes.
Great! Good that you had lots of readings to show your doctor and that she is willing to try decreasing your meds! And good choice to try ditching the Toprol first.
Good luck to ya! Here's hoping you can get med free!
You bring up a lot of valid points. Why won't my DO do the same thing with the Atenolol (Wean) without me having to do it myself???? I get readings that range from 113/65 to 121/71. He just says that they are good meds. I am 34, 5' 11" 152 with perfect blood results, 2 perfect EKGS, chest xray & etc. It really doesn't make sense why he won't wean me. Today I had a reading of 121/71 & I wasn't happy, but that is about 5 points higher than normal on the systolic & diastolic than I am used to. It doesn't make much sense when I have the side-effects.
Thanks Mgraylorn. Dr. has given me 7 day supply of 50mg toprol xl and 14 days of 25mg. It would be great to get off these meds. I have noticed a big difference with changing my diet, more fruit & vegs etc.,
