Hi,
I'm 21 years old and approx. 5 years ago I was diagnosed with severe HBP. I've been taken off and on medication for it. That seem to lower the HBP as long as I take it. I've been taking Emconcor and Indernal retard. I am certainly not overweight and try to eat healthy and to excercise well.
My doctor seems to be much more concerned than I'm.
The following symptoms have been occuring since I was diagnosed with HBP:
- problems with my nose, sometimes posterior nosebleeds or blood-streaked phlegm. Foul odor in nose and dryness. (a CT of the head and sinus area was taken appr. 1 year ago and showed nothing wrong). They also took an ultrasound of the neck which was clear also.
- Blurry vision accompanied with headaches and a foggy feeling. Especialy when walking on the street I get this feeling. It feels like there is something "ticking" in my head at times. I was prescribed glasses and these helped.

I must say that I'be been taken these meds off and on for the past 5 years, however my doctor said they needed to be taken. When I have a cold or something and to see him he always takes my BP and it's always too high so I take these meds again for a while. I just feel it's isn't right for a 21 year old to take HBP meds.

Can someone correlate with these symptoms?

Were these syptoms while you were taking meds or without any medication?

If they were without meds they are possible signs of a blood pressure problem, but if they occurred while on meds they could be side effects of the medications

First of all, high blood pressure ( known as essential or primary hypertension) in a 21 yr old is rare.
Even RARER in a teenager. You say the high BP was diagnosed 5 years ago?

Has your doctor run all the necessary tests to rule out secondary causes?
This should be absolutely mandatory in someone your age.
Secondary causes could be due to thryoid problems, adrenal gland tumor, kidney disorders including renal stenosis, and other things all of which are treatable and once treated, blood pressure normalizes.

Also, you say you've been taking the meds "on and off". For blood pressure drugs to be effective they must be taken every day on a regular basis.

Still, you say your doc is concerned...so ask him if he has indeed definitively ruled out a secondary cause in your case.

I know that high blood pressure is showing up in younger people more and more these days but nevertheless, it is still an unusual occurrence.

You also don't say what your blood pressure readings are. I agree, you should be checked for secondary causes, but if your pressure is very high, you need to take medication continuously - no matter how old you are.

Medication should be last resort Graylorn. Way too many side-effects! Other means should be tried for at least 3 months+ before meds. are prescribed.
