I have seen some negative comments about Atenolol here. I was curious, what is bad about it? I am taking 100 mg right now and I can't sleep at night, it's not lowering my BP, but other than, that it's OK. If you have bad side effects, what are they?
1. It lowers my pulse too much
2. It doesn't lower my BP at all
3. It is almost impossible to get off it
4. It makes me very tired
5. It can't be used with a lot of other meds
6. It makes exercise very difficult
7. It causes anxiety
8. Some say it causes intestinal problems
9. It makes my feet and hands painfully cold (even in the summer)
10. it causes weight gain
These are just the top 10 things that popped into my mind. I'm sure I will think of others later.

The reasons why I could not take atenolol:
1) it caused GI Track problems, making my stomach feel inflammed;
2) it caused sweating (though not listed as a side effect);
3) it caused severe chills and feeling of being cold, often;
4) it caused GERD;
5) it caused nausea;
6) it caused allergies to be worse;
7) it caused BAD moods;
8) it caused racing heart;
9) it caused anxiety;
10) it caused many a sleepless night;
11) it caused me to feel like I was terribly sick all the time;
12) but it did not cause me sleepiness, at all! I was never tired from this pill.
Go figure!!!!
I did not have a difficult time weaning off this drug. 50 mgs, down to 25 mg, down to 12.5 and voila....I am med free and enjoying life once again. I would have never thought this possible given the fact that I was so miserable for 6 months, thinking I was dying from an unknown illness, rather than think that this pill was the cause of my problems.

Oh Yeah, I forgot that one. I had a feeling of doom, with thoughts of dying, for the first several years I took atenolol. That one finally went away though.
Let me add this, after I got so dizzy I fell into the tv and got a bad cut on my forehead, they took bp in the er and it was 116 before they put in about 15 stitches.
I've just started taking Atenolol again after a break from it. Last time it lowered my pulse but did nothing for my bp. This time, the only side effect I seem to have from it is like something is stuck in my throat. It's a terrible feeling. I hope it goes away.
I don't know that I would notice any of the other side effects as I am taking Clonidine and that causes extreme sleepiness and dry mouth.
Lowered my heart rate. In doing so, my running was suffering. Sometimes feeling tired shortly after beginning my run. At times, felt like I was getting out of breath too soon.
Goodness, so many things I dislike about Atenolol...like the loss of half of my hair, high anxiety, tiredness, can't get my heart rate above 90 when working out...thank goodness I am finally getting off of it!
