Lightbulb 21 with high blood pressure

My friend is 21 and she was unable to get birth control bills because he blood pressure has been 2 high. Every time she checks it, it is high and she says its because she is nervous thats y it comes back high. I disagree I think it is high because she is not the healthiest person.

She also has swellin in her ankles and knees from water retention which they told her to cut out sodium, which she doesnt do.

Her eating habbits are not the best her mother fries and uses a lot of salt in her cooking. Im affraid for there entire family because her father is overweight her 10 year old sister is over weight and her other 12 year old sister is skinny but has a big belly. My friend is also a bit heavy herself, she doesnt kno how to eat right and she drinks a lot of alcohol I try to tell her she needs to take better care of herself but she just getts mad at me.

I know people can have heart attacks in there 20's

But is her bp high because she is nervous or does she have a serious problem?
Also her overweight father i feel is a heart attack waiting to happen, he doesnt over eat or snack through out the day he just eats very unhealthy meals that are fried and salty.

Re: 21 with high blood pressure

She might get a bit of a boost in blood pressure numbers from being nervous, but from your description, it sounds like she does have high blood pressure. Do you know how high her blood pressure readings were? Has she been told to take blood pressure medicine?

I was taken off the Pill because I developed high blood pressure. There are progestin only pills like Micronor that she might be able to take - those don't have the problem estrogen pills do with potentially raising blood pressure. There is also another thread with a discussion of low dose birth control pills that some doctors are letting their hypertensive patients use. Your friend should discuss other birth control options with her doctor.

Sounds like your friend's whole family has very unhealthy eating habits. You can find all sorts of information on diet and high blood pressure, but if your friend won't read it and act, I'm not sure what you can do. Unfortunately it may take someone in the family having a stroke or heart attack to wake the rest of them up.
