low blood pressure on a high blood pressure person
My husband is on meds for blood pressure and his readings are about 120/45/56 We asked dr about those readings and they said it's good and keeping him healthy because of his heart/diabetes/ kidney illnesses. Still seems weard/low to me but i wonder if anyone else has these type readings, and if it causes any particular symptoms... Thanks for any input...wife of heartpatient.
Re: low blood pressure on a high blood pressure person
Could you explain what the 45 and 56 numbers are? Systolic of 120 sounds reasonable, but if 45 is the dystolic, it is way too low. Even 56 is a bit low. I'd also say the 45 and 56 are a bit low for heart rate too.
Re: low blood pressure on a high blood pressure person
your right on how you put the #'s. It seems dangerious but they said it's ok so long as he's not having symptoms. He does get dizzy sometimes now, but just seems like one of those things they're just not listning to us about.
Re: low blood pressure on a high blood pressure person
Does he drive? If he drives and he gets dizzy, I suggest you bring that combination to the attention of his doctor. A diastolic of 45 is very low, but I can see why they want to keep the systolic down with his medical conditions. Sometimes getting the right combination can be tricky, but if he is having symptoms, I'd bring it up with the doctor again.
Re: low blood pressure on a high blood pressure person
Yeah, that's tricky to deal with. It sounds like he probably has isolated systolic hypertension and he is being treated to get the systolic under control. Unfortunately, when you bring one down, they both will come down. Given his medical condition, it sounds like he is being appropriately treated to keep cardiovascular risks to a minimum. However, you always have to weigh quality of life (symptoms) against risk and decide where to draw the compromise line. Less meds will result in an increase in BP and quality of life. However, it will also increase cardiovascular risk.

Thanks all, just needed reasurance and i think that what was answered by you, that it is just that, it's "his" own needs to be like that so it's ok. And because he's not really dizzy, but occasionally upon standing, feels lightheaded, we'll keep an eye on it and lower dose if continues.
