2 years ago I went for a physical and my blood pressure was 199/99...I was put on captopril...it made me blotchy and horrible coloring...I was on that for 2 years, going faithfully for my yearly, and this last ime I went, he changed my meds to Atenolol...reading was 168/80. I do suffer from white coat syndrome and I smoke. I had a hysterectomy in 2001, and I am off hormones... and I'm miserable with night sweats, anxiety and mood swings. Anyway, I have felt better in the 2 weeks I've been on it,my color is so much better... but since reading posts on this board, I'm afraid that it will affect my legs....anyone have any input?

I have a Medical Book that I occasionally refer to. It mentions that if the difference between systolic and diastolic blood pressure chronically exceeds 60 points a heart condition is usually present. You should consider having a CT Heart Scan. If you have a problem you need to know now. I can't believe your doctor overlooked this possibility.

Get yourself a BP tester and start getting readings at home. The occasional reeading in a medical environment might give the entirely wrong picture.

Atenolol ususally saps our energy but SOME people do alright on it. Keep taking it til you find a good reason to stop. Of course, controlling to a 168 systolic is not good enough, but I'll bet you;re at-home readings are a lot better.

What dosage of atenolol are you on?
