With a reading like that, though not an emergency, I would make an appointment to see a doctor and have his BP checked before doing much heavy exercise. If he tends to be especially anxious about going to a doctor, he might want to invest in a good home monitor, like an Omron. If he chooses to do so, get one that tests the upper arm, not the wrist or finger. Some times people who are anxious around doctors get especially high readings in the doctor's office, often referred to as "white coat syndrome." In that case, it can be helpful to have a set of readings from a home monitor to take with one to the doctor's office. But when he does go to the doctor, he should take the monitor with him to be checked against the doctor's monitor.
