High Blood Pressure....

On Sept.8th I was at work and became extremely red. I was told to go check my BP and it read 178 over 103. The pharamicist told me to go sit down for 10 minutes and come check it again. I did, and it went down to 167 over 98. They sent me home. I went to my doctor the next day and my BP was 152 over 96. He perscribed me Propranolol. I started the pill right away and take 3 pills a day. He told me to keep checking my BP. On Sept.9th at 11am it read 148 over 92 and at 7pm it read 142 over 88. Today at 3pm it read 155 over 100 PR 117, 4pm it read 141 over 89 PR 114, 5pm it read 146 over 93. I am wondering why my top number seems to be staying high while my lower number is coming down? And why do the numbers fluctuate (sp?) so much? I was wondering what a good way to lower the top number would be? I'm 27/female/smoker (approx. 1 pack lasts 2 days) /doesn't drink alcohol very often/not very active/approx. 30 lbs over weight-just started exercising. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
~Peace~

Re: High Blood Pressure....

It looks like you need to make some lifestyle changes, which in conjunction with meds can lower your BP.

- Lose the excess weight
- Exercise - My BP plummets after exercise
- eat plenty of lean meats, fish and vegatables. Ditch anything white, like bread, potatos, sugar, etc
- Steer clear from excess salt. Do the DASH diet if necessary.
- Last but not least, QUIT smoking. Smoking is the worst thing for your BP and arteries.

There are many other posters here who will give you sound advice (this is my favorite forum )

Keep us posted on your progess.

Thanks so much! Great advice
I plan on exercising everyday...hopefully I will get off my lazy but and stick with it. We have an Eliptical (sp?) machine and I hope to start off by going on that a half hour every day for starters. I went on today for a half hour, I hope I will keep up with it and progress from there. I get so bored on it. Today I watched The Simpsons while on it and that helped. I also need to change my diet. One good thing is, I barley even eat salt. Once in a blue moon I will put it on my fries but we havent had salt in the house for months now. I'm more of a pepper kinda gal. And smoking, I know I know...lol. The sad thing is.....I know it's harmful and disgusting....but, I enjoy it. I know, sick!! Thanks so much for the reply, I appreciate it.
~Peace~

Re: High Blood Pressure....

Yes your pulse rate is high, average should be 60-80 beats per minute. It can raise due to stress, sleep deprivation, etc. But definitely something that should be brought up to the doctors attention. Not way off the charts, but enough for concern.

Your systolic is not dropping substantially, when you average your 3 daily readings today it is 147/94. Most people take 3 readings as you did, and average them, that gives you the ballpark figure of your daily reading.
