Exercise

I take Diovan for my hypertension. I do alot of aerobic exercise that includes walking on my treadmill and rebounding ( jogging in place on a minitrampoline). I do aerobic exercise at least 5 times a week for 45 minute intervals. I also have been strength training using dumbells. I do bicep curls using 25 pound dumbells, overhead presses using 12 pound dumbells and the other exercises I go lighter on the weight ( 5 to 7 pound dumbells). I asked my doctor if it was ok to strength train and he said yes. I have read conflicting reports some saying it is good and can lower blood pressure and others saying to keep it very light with high repetitions. Am I using too much weight and should I go lighter? I do 15 reps with 3 or 4 sets for each exercise and I do about 12 different exercises and it takes about one hour to complete the whole session. I do this 3 times a week. I am just trying to tone my muscles and not build bulky muscles..

I'm a female who has weight trained for 15 years and did heavy weights for a long time. I did builk up (140lbs at 14% body fat, could've done a competition) quite a bit. The last several years I keep it light to medium with medium to high reps. I don't want the muscles that I used to have. Plus my joints can no longer bear the heavy weights.

Re: Exercise

Do you have hypertension? I have just noticed that on the days that I strength train after work when I check my blood pressure later my systolic is always in the high normal or high range but the diastolic number is 75 or 80. I was just wondering if lifting the weights makes your blood vessels constrict? On the days I walk or do aerobics my systolic number goes way down (105 and sometimes lower while my diastolic stays around 75 or 80. I guess aerobic exercise causes the blood vessels to dilate which would lower the pressure.. I was just wondering if maybe I am lifting weights that may be too heavy and should I go lighter with high repetitions?

Re: Exercise

Do I have hypertension? That's been the million dollar question for me for the last year. My BP is always high at the doctor's office (both reg doctor and cardiologist). They seem to think if it's high at there office then there is a propensity to develop hypertension in the future. So I monitor mine closely. It averages 122/78 at home even with spikes. On my heavy cardio days, my BP can drop to 110/65 within a few hours of exercise. I can have spikes to 150/90 though when I'm stressed.
