Lisinopril and Coughing - HELP

I took Lisinopril for 2 months and had a terrible, hacking cough. Doctor said it was a side effect (wish I had know that was a possibility - I wouldn't have waited 2 months to go back). I've been off of it for about 10 days and the coughing has only improved a little bit. Makes sleeping impossible. Anyone know how long it takes for it to go away. Margie

I just talked to somone with the same problem. They told me it took 3 weeks...but I've read that a couple weeks is the norm. BTW...when did the cough START from the time you first took it? I've been on a similar drug (Ace II inhibitor) for 2 weeks now with no problems.

Re: Lisinopril and Coughing - HELP

I was on it for nearly a month before the coughing started. It's like no cough I've ever had before - unremitting and nothing helps. Surely it will be gone soon.

I agree,

a couple weeks should be all that's necessary. Unfortunately, at his time of year there could be a lurking cough due to a coincidental cold...that could complicate the timetable.

But the ACE cough is SOO idistinctive with that unbearable, irresistable tickle that you CANNOT ignore and must eventually give way to and HACK. It's pretty easy to differentiate between it and the cough of a cold or bronchitis or cigarette hack.

I think it lasted several days to a week after I went off enalapril.

I was on Altace in 2000, and after about 3 months I developed the ALMIGHTY cough. I had no idea it was the meds., really thought I had bronchitis until the cough got so bad, tears would run down my face. I finally called the dr. and he told me..."Don't worry about it, it will pass"! Needless to say it didn't, and after another 3 weeks of hacking my brains out I told him I wanted OFF!!! It took me about 4 weeks before it really went away. Man, I have never had a cough like that in my entire life, I thought I was going to cough a lung up any day.

Good luck, hope it goes soon, I know what your going thru!!

Re: Lisinopril and Coughing - HELP

My cough started maybe a week after I started lisinopril. It would hit me at certain times, especially in the morning and after meals. Like others say, it's a very annoying tickle in the back of your throat. I was getting very close to quitting the medicine altogether, but the cough went away after about a week and hasn't returned in over 3 years of use. So anyone who gets the cough may want to tough it out and see if it goes away. I now take 20mp lisinopril and 25 mg chlorthalidone (diuretic) each day and have no side effects whatsoever. All my side effects seem to be in the first few weeks- I had some ED for a few days but that went away.

Re: Lisinopril and Coughing - HELP

I toughed it out for 6 months before I found out the cough was from enalapril...It was a new drug and there was no Internet so "Who knew?"
I'm convinced that if I took it for 6 years I'd have coughed for 6 years.

Best any cougher can do is get off the drug because the OTHER common allergic reaction to this class of drugs is angioedema which can kill. The cough should serve as a roadside warning.

I've been on Lisinopril for almost a year, and I still cough. It is annoying.

Re: Lisinopril and Coughing - HELP

I was on lisinopril for two years and finally just had it and demanded a change. For the first year it was just a hacky cough and then in the second year the coughing became worse keeping me awake at night and producing thick phlegm which would gag me. They then changed my meds and within one week.......NO MORE COUGHING except the occasional allergy cough.
