Advice on how to lower BP?

Friends:

I posted last night: Here is the story 40 yr old male 5'11" 210 great shape, very active. BP has been 140-165/94-100 for a 6-12 mos. Tried Atenonol. It worked bp was 100/70 hr 45. Made feel so lousy couldn't take(5 days worth) Dr put me on Altace(ACE inhibitor) 6-8 weeks BO still high if not higher. 2.5mg, then 5mg then 7.5 no lowering. I took myself off. Trying to watch what I eat and hit the gym and lower stress.

Bought a home BP monitoring system and everytime I take my BP it is high. I could be sitting watching tv for three hours and take my BP it is 150/100. Itis driving me crazy. Any suggestions. Could it all be caused by some General Anxiety Disorder. erik

Re: Advice on how to lower BP?

I'd try a diuretic- since you didn't respond to the ACE inhibitor it looks like you're not a renin-sensitive hypertensive which may mean you're a salt-sensitive hypertensive and will respond well to the diuretic.

Re: Advice on how to lower BP?

Do you drink? My doctor had me cut out alcohol all together. Alcohol can also contribute to anxiety, so if it applies, it could be something to consider.

Other suggestions I've heard is to be sure you're getting enough potassium, either through your diet or supplements (CHECK with your doctor and medication warnings first though, there are some where extra potassium is dangerous).

How about deep breathing/yoga/meditation?

I had success with acupuncture a while back. Unfortunately I couldn't afford to continue with it. So, if you have the means, it's something you could try.

Good luck!!!
