Been to the ER due to high BP - High & Low Blood Pressure Message Board

hi again,

Yesterday wasn't that good.

Two days ago I started having a very severe back headache. It wasn't painful, more like a very strong pulsing tension. I don't usually go to hospitals for headaches, but yesterday was different. Because I was also experiencing a very painful shoulder due to the headache.

So, I went to the ER. Got shocked when my BP was 150/110. The Dr. asked me if that's common for me, I told him I do sometimes have elevated BP. So he gave me Aspirirn, I don't know what the relation could be between Aspirin and high BP.

When BP went down to 130/90 (thought this is still high?) they discharged me. So, I saw the internist today to discuss the high heart rate issue again, BP was 130/90 again. I asked him about hypertension, he seems to be not interested! He thinks it's OK.

So, is 130/90 really normal? I remember also that I had a BP of 140/85 in one of the appointments.

Aren't these readings enough to get the Dr. concerned?

The 130 number and 85 number is fine. They consider hypertension to be 140/90 continously or at least maybe 8/10 times. Your BP really needs to be monitored in order to find out if indeed you are hypertensive. Maybe consider buying a at home BP monitor and keeping an eye on it yourself and if over a period of time it is above 140/90 take the readings to your doctor. Your doctor wouldn't be concerned about the once off of the 150/110, pains makes your BP go up.

Your bp is on the margin. Work on losing weight and exercising before doing anything else. The one unusually high reading could have been caused by the headache. Not all that much to worry about, in mly opinion. Just live a little more sensibly.

I was in to see the dr. for some stressfull test results a few years agao and my bp that day was 175/117. Dr. looked at me and told me i needed to relax and all of my test results were fine...they never took it again to make sure it was coming down and sent me on my way.

Pain and infection are both culprits of raising your Bp. With my last sinus infection my bp was running really high off and on until I got into about day 4 of my antibiotic. Than it started coming back down again. Thats why I need to go back to see the dr about my bp. WHen I was in for my sinus infection it was 154/105. She told me to come back in a month and have it rechecked to make sure it came back down. She said infection can cause high bp. It's better now that the sinus infection is gone.

My daughter who is 11 went into Er a few weeks back with what we thought was an apendicitus attack. Her Bp was up and the nurse told us that Bp is always usually elevated in everyone who is in pain. So maybe your headache had something to do with it being high but not the actual cause of the headache? JMHO

Hope that helps some...A home monitor is a good idea. I have one and Im glad I got one so I can reassure myself at home that my Bp is okay when I have just been to the drs office and had a white coat high reading..take care

thanks for your replies. I do have a home monitoring device, but I don't know why I don't feel OK with it. It's crazy.

Maybe it's worth mentioning that I'm currently on Inderal (40 mg) to regulate the heart beats. So I wonder why I have these slightly elevated readings with this drug.

laura ... for the white coat thing, that might be the case, but I'm one of those who feel secured in hospitals

Anyways, I'll consider buying an old measuring device, everyone seems to agree that they are more accurate than the new ones.
