What is High Blood Pressure?

Hello,

What I would like to know is how many times do you have to have readings over 140/90 for one to be considered hypertensive. I take my blood pressure regularly because I have a bicuspid aortic valve and I want to make sure my pressure is not consistently high. When I go to the doctor my pressure is always through the roof (usually at least 140/90) because I am nervous. At home thought it's up and down. Here are my most recent readings:

149/89
110/77
112/77
151/85
117/77
117/71
128/77
134/77
132/70
114/77
120/85
115/76
etc.....

Anyway, as you can see it's all over the place. So I want to know if I am considered hypertensive with these reading? Thanks!

I think you have to have 2 readings with the diastolic (bottom number) at or over 90 to be considered hypertensive. Many of your readings are considered normal, a few of them ( with 85 as the diastolic) indicate "prehypertension".

If you have no other health problems, I'd suggest forgetting about your bp for a while. If most of your readings are in the normal range, you're ok.

Re: What is High Blood Pressure?

Carly,
Take the average and see what it is...under 140/90, don't medicate it but keep a close watch, lower salt intake and alcohol and lose weight if you need it.
If the average is under 135/85, forget about it for a couple months.

It looks like you are CERTAINLY below 140/90 and even a bit below 130/80 so don't worry about the occasional systolic over 140, your BP looks fine.

(I'd work the average out but I am still having my first cup of coffee this morning.)
