LENIN question for you...or anyone else

Hi ive seen your replies and you seem well educated maybe you can help me out. ill try to make this as short as possible. Ive had chronic headaches since i was about 13 or 14 i had a ct scan when i was about 16 because i bumped heads with a roller skater all came back normal. ive dealt with the headaches until recently they got kinda worse after i had my daughter. My doc put me on inderal i was border line high bp (as a result of Birth control pills i assumed). the inderal was mainly to help with headaches. didnt work. i stopped the birthcontrol pill 6 months ago. In the middle of april i went off inderal and he gave me topamax for headaches 3 weeks into taking topamax (which helped the headaches) i felt like i was going crazy i had this over all uneasy feeling like something bad was gonna happen. doc told me to stop taking it and i did. so i was OFF topamax for about 3 weeks. in that time i started taking aleve for headaches i developed a weird pinchng feeling in my chest shoulder and down my left arm into my pinky finger i got scared went to ER they did an EKG chest xray all was normal. So then i "dealt" with headaches tried taking no pain relievers. This past monday (5days) ago i in the afternoon i started feeling "off balance" not dizzy but weird" it does not effect my walking or driving and the room does not spin. so monday night i continued topamax because headaches were back and doc told me to stop so i stopped on wednesday night (3 pills) thursday i decided while i was running around i would stop off at rite aid and check my BP when i did it was normal but my pule was 143 i went ahead to my meeting and came back home nervous about it and it was down to 112 (i bought a home bp checker while i was there) doc got me in to see him yesterday ran anemia test it was negative. now im waiting for electrolyte blood results. my pulse was a steady 100 when i was there in his office he said it is not heart related. This morning i woke up came downstairs to check my pulse and it was 120. i started the inderal again this morning and since then it has stayed in the 80`s. my dizziness is hard to describe it feels like one eye is wrong. i just had a new eye exam on thursday and got new contacts. dizziness does not seem to be as prominent as it was in the middle of the week. and it doesnt stop me from doing things and it does not get worse when i bend over or move my head. Dr also said i have TMJ on left side (headaches always start on left side and left side of neck and down arm aches from time to time) What im worried about is some heart problem they are not looking for. he said theres no reason to further look into heart issues. he mentioned hormonal problems. thyroid test was normal. Sorry this is so long! maybe someone can give me some answers.
Thanks for your time. forgot to mention i am 28

Re: LENIN question for you...or anyone else

Some thoughts:

Topamax is an anti-seizure medication that may be overprescribled for headaches. You might find this interesting:
Quote:
If you don't have a temporal lobe dysfunction or problems with other parts of your brain that Topamax hits, or you're at the wrong dosage, it (Topamax) will make you dumber than a box of rocks. The kidney stones aren't much fun. Because it was newly approved for migraines and can work at a low dosage without all the sucky side effects of Depakote (Who cares if you're stupid as long as you're not fat and don't need blood work?) the pharmaceutical reps are pressuring the doctors to prescribe it to anyone and everyone with bad head pain, even if it's not appropriate. New Approval Syndrome can thus screw people by prescribing them the wrong drug for their migraines. Worse yet when they may not even have migraines, and perhaps have trigeminal neuralgia, for which Tegretol is more appropriate.
I included that primarily because of the mention of trigeminal neuralgia...which really is a variant of TMJ, which can most definitely cause headaches, though not migraine. The feeling you are going crazy sounds about right for the Topamax, and it can also cause periferal paraesthesia you mention (tingling in the fingers) although that sounds more like a nerve root pinch in your upper back.

THat "one eye" syndrome is very common with migraine.

I suffered vascular headaches infrequently and got the "male version" the God-awful, life destroying, CLUSTER headache that was so beyond unbearable that words fail me. When I see the squiggly aura, 40 mg. Inderal stops it if I catch it fast enough. WHen it progresses, I find I can stop it with any ergot compounds and if it gets beyong that, the awful drug SANSERT stops it but has me in a mescaline-like haze for 48 hours.

As you know, BC pills usually are the worst thing for migraine sufferers. Did the headaches go away during your pregnancy?
You must just keep searching for the right migraine drug with the least obnoxious side effects.
The HEADACHE FORUM in Healthboards has a lot of good information.

As you've heard a lot of times before, although it is NEVER comforting, the headaches will likely go away with menopause. They disappeared overnight when my sister had her plumbing removed because of endometriosis.

Keep looking for your migraine triggers. Chemical scents and certain foods are notorious: chocolate, wine, apples, OJ come to mind as frequent migraine triggers.

If you need a BP med, the best class is probaly still the beta-blockers. Even if inderal didn't stop your headaches, maybe atenolol or nadolol will.

IF the headaches are caused by TMJ, then the ALLEVE will do more good than any beta-blocker.

Re: LENIN question for you...or anyone else

Yeah the topamax i know has a side effect of anxiety. its hard to explain. ill be sitting here fine and dandy and all the sudden i get this uneasy feeling like something bad is gonna happen. ive been told thats what anxiety is. Maybe that caused the racing pounding heart?

My concern is the dizziness. i think i stated its not bad enough to where i fall over or throw up it kinda feels like when im sitting my head is gonna roll right off my shoulders.
The headaches and dizziness are NEVER together. another thing i thought was weird is. When something like this is going on i dont have a headache you would think i would due to all the stress of worrying but i dont.
I did know BC pills can cause bad migraines thats why i stopped it. but it didnt take them away.
During my pregnancy i had them for the first 3 months and then i dont recall having them til after she was born. i also thought back i was on vitamins too though. not prenatels because they made me sick but i took the flintstones ones. maybe a vitamin definciency? someone else mentioned b12. I have been congested since march cuz of a bad head cold but i didnt think dizziness would just now start after being 2 months ago but i have been congested. i dont have pressure in my sinuses but i can feel stuff there and alot of drainage. i noticed a week ago when i put my head down i immediately started getting a headache. The headaches mainly started up again about 2 months after i had my daughter. but i have had them for several years. sometimes every day sometimes every other day or then 2 times a weeks it always varies.
I mainly started the beta blocker because of the high heart rate that was on and off. i figured it would calm my nerves some. either anxiety is causing the high rate or its the high rate causing the anxiety. i started it yesterday and my rate has stayed pretty much at 70s to 80s. Doctor said if my dizziness was heart related it would be much worse like "room spinning" i dont know. ive never been one to worry about stuff. the only time i ever went to the dr was to have a baby! Im thinking that topamax messed me up although i was only on it for 3 weeks. i think that was enough to do some damage. THANKS lenin for your response.
Now if i can figure out the dizziness

Thanks again

Re: LENIN question for you...or anyone else

Worried,

Try taking NOTHING for 2 weeks and see if the dizziness goes away.
If it doesn't then none of the drugs is to blame. If it DOES go away, then one of them probably IS.

Most often dizziness is caused by an inflammation in the inner ear. Some times it goes away in days, sometimes it takes far longer.

Re: LENIN question for you...or anyone else

Hi Lenin

Thanks for your reply.

The dizziness started before i started any meds so i know its not the meds. I was feeling real bad last night i went to the ER. they did EKG, Chest X-Ray, All the blood work for the heart, different blood work (electrolytes) i believe. and being i have a history of headaches they even did a CT Scan. Everything came back Normal. He told me exactly what you just did. Inner ear. So he suggested i go to a ear doctor. This is driving me nuts.

Re: LENIN question for you...or anyone else

Get some meclizine (25 mg.) for the dizziness. It's OTC as the non-drowsy formulation of Dramamine.
Worth a try.
