I am 35yr, f and am overweight and on 2 betablockers a day. Lately, I have been having issues with spikes in my blood pressure and have been to the ER twice in this past month. I get this wierd feeling and then BAM! My blood pressure is up to 150/100. Normally, its 115/75. I want to loose weight and get back into an exercise program, but everytime I exercise I feel like crap afterwards. I tried 20 and even 15 min slow walk on a treadmill, and feel like someone is standing on my chest. I have had EKGs, and nuclear stress tests and the docs have found nothing. I am afraid to push myself, but all my cardio doc says is that I need to loose weight in order to get my blood pressure back in control? Does anyone have some words of wisdom out there for me?

Lylone you might be having a reaction to the Beta Blockers, my mom had this problem you are describing and they adjusted/changed the meds. But you do have to address your weight it is a big factor in HBP control get together with a registered dietician if you can your Doc can recommend one. But make him/her listen about the side effects your having this is the first step. Do you have diabetes? If you do are you taking pills for this?
I'm sorry that you are not feeling good. I was on Beta-Blockers for 3.5 years and it was effecting my energy levels, I had a depression from it too, vision problems and impaired concentration. My mother was on Beta-Blockers for 7.5 years and I can't tell you what happened when she stopped it 2 months ago . She is 66 but when she stopped the Beta-Blocker now she feels like 30 . She's doing all the home work again and she's very happy off the bta-blockers.
I advice you to tell your doctor to change the medication from Beta-Blocker to some other H Blood Pressure drug classes. Listen it took me several months to find the best medication for me because I have tried many and none of them works except Cardiazim which is a Calcuim Channel Blocker drug.
Of course you need to lose weight if you are overweight and this will help a lot in reducing your blood pressure.
I'm sure that when you wean off the beta-blockers your energy levels will go up and you will feel better. By the way, you can't just stop beta-blocker in on day. You need to slowly reduce the dosage, you need to talk to your doctor about that to tell you how to do it.
I can't tell you how much I'm happy without beta-blockers and I hope you will feel the same soon.
good luck,
Michael
No, I don't have diabetes. I am ob the beta-blockers also because I have a history of SVTs. I also take Benicar in the morning. Since my cardio is on vacation for three weeks, I am going to see a nurse practioner tomorrow. I have been on my meds for more than 6 months with no issues. Its almost like within the last 2 months I been having issues. Some days I am doing absolutely nothing, and whammo... blood pressure goes crazy. I keep being told by the on call nurse not to worry unless I have pain or can't breathe, but still it scares the crap out of me.
Thanks to all
Have you looked into the possibility of panic attacks (anxiety attacks)? What are your other symptoms? Increased heart rate? Chest pains? I have Anxiety Disorder, and what you are describing sounds familiar. Might be worth asking about.
SoccerDad,
Funny that you would mention that. I was recently placed on xanax(actually the generic form) for anxiety a couple of days ago. I am happy to say that I was able to hit the treadmill for 15 minutes today and had no problems. I made sure I took the xanax, atenonol and nexium an hour before and so far so good. I just found it hard to believe that all of a sudden sodium was causing me to have spikes. I am seeing a therapist tomorrow and I hope that she helps. I don't want to be on zanax forever! Oh and about going to see a dietician...my doc said to go to weight watchers. I am going to try and limit my portion sizes and try to eat more veggies for a while since all these doc, ER and therapist visits are really starting to hurt me financially. I don't eat fast food and sodas, and that seems to be the first thing everyone tells me to cut out. I think I just eat too much and need to stop before I am full. Thanks to all for your encouragement. So far this board has really helped me out.
