Lenin and all...should I be on meds?

My bp has risen steadily over the past several months. 5 years ago when I was 35 and 30 lbs overweight, I had my first experience with bp. The doctor put me on meds and within 30 days I lost the extra weight, the bp normalized and I stopped the meds. Now it seems to be coming back. I weigh 165 and have 24% body fat, I could stand to lose 5 pounds and get the body fat down to 18%. I run 5 miles a day six days a week. My diet consist on tofu, lots of veggies, soymilk and fish. I may eat meat once a month. There is hardly any sodium in my diet. I notice that the running seems to keep the bp in check, but if I go a few days without running the bp goes up! Here are my stats:

Day 1: 128/83 P77 Good
Day 2: 125/86 P71 Good
Day 3: 133/76 P64 (day) 124/86 (night) Good
Day 4: 122/83 P56 (day) 125/69 (night) Good
Day 5: 129/87 P56 (day) 125/85 (night) Starting to rise
Day 6: 131/91 P69 (day) 132/87 (night) Rising more
Day 7: 125/82 P64 Good
Day 8: 124/79 P68 Good
Day 9: 125/88 P65 (day) 140/80 (night)
Day10: 130/93 P63 Rising
Day11: 131/77 P65
Day12: 135/85 P68
Day13: 132/86 P55
Day15: 148/90-100 High (day) 141/81 P57 (night)
Day16: 123/82 P71
Day17: 111/78 P68 (day) 107/77 (night)
Day18: 121/79 P64
Day19: 138/95 P74 126/90 (day) 128/88 (night) Rising again
Day20: 126/99 P102 (day) 127/88 P78 (night) I had a slight cold on this day
Day21: 135/91 P80 (day) 135/92 P70 (night) Rising
Day22: 135/86 P70 (day) 131/86 P64 (night) Rising

I know the days that show 121/79 and etc are normal and fine but what worries me is the days that are high. When it runs that high I can feel it. Sometimes I get a tight chest and other times I just don't feel well. I have been checked by a cardiologist and all was fine. I am taking supplements such as garlic, hawthorne, grape seed extract and celery seed extract to help with the bp. What should I do all? The doctor said I was borderline and getting on meds was up to me. But I really don't want to be on meds, but I don't want to make an error either. Help!

Re: Lenin and all...should I be on meds?

I'm looking at 34 readings with 3 systolics over 140 and none over 150. Six diastolics are over 90 and none are over 100.

I can see that the averages are well below 140/90...like upper 120's and mid 80's (you'll have to do the additions. )
So I;ll say no, there's no need for any meds unless you have another condition like angina or tachycardia or migraine.

Re: Lenin and all...should I be on meds?

I agree with Lenin 100% and he helped me not freak out about a 160/90 reading I got. Blood pressure is going to rise and fall. It is normal. Having a borderline reading now and then is not like having constant high readings.

My problem was I read a post by someone who was concerned that their blood pressure was high at work so I tried to take it at work. I felt my heart pound as was in my office with the door closed and locked and wondering if anyone was going to try to come in or wonder what was going on. My pulse got way up and the reading was 160/90. Every reading I had at home was always about 120 to 135/ 70 to 80.

Let's face it before home Blood pressure monitoring kits you went for a physical once a year and if your reading was good, you were set for the year based on one good reading. Even the instructions are specific and say "rest 15 minutes before taking your BP, do not take for 1/2 hour after eating, do not take when you are stressed, take it in a quiet room.

If I were you I would keep monitoring it but like Lenin said, absent another condition there would not seem to be any need for meds at this time.
