Re: Clonidine and heart rate

Michael,

Clonidine is a central nervous system depressant that has a pretty strong antihypertensive effect. It must be taken several times a day or as a slow dispersal patch, called Catapres I believe.
If taken in pill form it can double as a good sleeping aid from what I've read from other posters...I've never taken it myself.

Re: Clonidine and heart rate

I see, I have taken a similar thing before and I felt that I'm very tired so I stopped after the first dosage.
Thanks for help
Michael

Lenin, you said that it affects the nervous system by depressing it. Does this mean that it calms the nerves? My mom has been on clonidine for about 18 mos. It does lower her bp and helps her sleep, but she has to take other bp meds along with it.

Also another question: does clonidine affect the lungs at all? My mom has a constant cough.

Re: Clonidine and heart rate

That's correct Mike, it is a tranquilizer and causes relaxation.

But as ICC pointed out some few people can have an idiosyncratic reaction...insomnia.
(Same can be said for beta-blockers...some sleep, some are awake all night.)

If anything clonidine SUPPRESSES coughing. Is you mother on any ACE inhibitor, they frequently cause coughing?

Re: Clonidine and heart rate

Let me tell you Mike, clonidine does work but it does make you sleepy. I have however noticed it makes me more sleepy if my pressure is high. If my BP is normal and the med doesn't have to work so hard, I'm not so sleepy and actually stay up....so it takes some adjusting to. Also, I am on Lisinopril 40mg a day. Before the clonidine, I would have a little cough...with the clonidine, no cough.

One thing about clonidine that is good...it brings my pressure down quick...bad thing... Some days at work...I feel as if I'm just a zombie and nodding off....I have to take a break, close my door and take a little cat nap.
